India's Look East policy is a failure, says Chinese media

India's [ Images ] recent attempts at forging closer ties with Japan [ Images ] and South East ASian Nations have not gobe down well with the Chinese Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [ Images ] concluding a successful visit ot Japan, Vietnam and Malaysia, the Chinese media have reacted with disdain and made light of India's attempts to form a "regional counter balance to China."

An article in the Chinese newpaper People Daily, says that Japan is eeking out India to secure its supply of rare earth materials. Japan is said to be anxious to decrease its undue reliance on Chinese rare earth materials.

The People Daily is the mouthpiece of China's ruling Communist Party and such articles are believed to be the an insight into the Chinese leadership's thinking.
India and Japan are ideal partners as they believe that by coming together they could counter balance China's military assertiveness, especially in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, the article said

Some Japanese experts have questioned the Tokyo's close ties with India and Vietnam saying that their pre-existing issues may drag Japan into an unnecessary confrontation with Beijing [ Images ].

The report also said that India cannot relax just by taking advantage of the China-Japan standoff. Criticising India's 'Look East Policy' as a failure of India's policy of Non-Alignment, the article said India "should skip the out-of-tune-piece."

The article concluded by saying that the Indian leadership would do well to remember that China was India largest trading partner in Asia with an estimated US $ 60 billion in total.

If it is such a failure as they are making it out to be, then why are they bothering to even comment on it?

the problem is we both india and china are trying to proove what is bigger elephants trunk or dragons tail. No one is ready to accept the supremacy of one another. And main reason is the trust deficit which we have among ourselves. Indians dont trust chinese and chinese either dont think highly of Indians. its time to re educate the children else we would end up becoming the puppets in the hands of some handlers sitting in far off lands. China started with string of pearls India replied back with look east policy. we need to understand each other for the progress of asia

. .
article just made a statement on failure of India's policy of Non-Alignment..

India's Look East policy looks to be going great...

and the first time chinese take note of the US $ 60 billion trade with india...

japan has really making a difference , the chinese " chhatpatahat is visible..

fail? really ? our PM didnt even reached our country after after signing bilatreal and other several agreements,,,and they already declared it failed..lol:disagree:

.
the alliances have yet to generate any gains for us...no need to get jingoistic.

our media has been crying about the string of pearls for quite a while, i think the chinese deserve a fair share of voicing their concerns about our moves.

GOI needs to continue working quietly and not pay too much attention to such articles (neither should my dear Indian members)

60 Billion dollars is a bilateral trade it is not india's with China so India needs China and Vice versa.
It is Better for China to select a friend based on trade in South Asia if it highlights trade not strategic then. China foreign policy is looking immature it sees as a trade giant and wants every body to play according to it based on that. On the other hand this policy do not work for India as India has lot of access to other markets and lot of its domestic consumption market.

If it is such a failure as they are making it out to be, then why are they bothering to even comment on it?exactly! Hans dont like or policy coz it will create problems for them.

Japan, despite its economic down turn is still a preeminent economic power in the world with a per capita income and a standard of living that compares favourably with the best in the world. All south Asian countries have a lot to be grateful to Japan for. Some may not admit to that but that is a fact. What is India's fault if we wish to retain or enhance our relationship with Japan?

How can India drag Japan down due to its past baggage? Japan has its own past vis a vis China to consider? The past never vanishes, it has to be dealt with, it has to be resolved and put to rest. But the present does not become a hostage to the past. We can not stop thinking of the present and the future due to the existence of a past. Life has to go on.

Who says that India wants to work out an anti China lobby. All India wants to achieve is a pro India lobby. China is most welcome to join this lobby and be our friend and well wisher, so is America. Russia already is a friend...... When will the world understand that to India, the great powers don't really matter. Only India matters. The great powers are here today and gone tomorrow. India is a 5000 year old civilisation and India will be around after another 5000 years.

People's daily,is not this a CPC mouthpiece,so basically it means even their govt like to rant

They should have thought about it before forming the holy alliance with Pakistan against India.

Good post.

On this point I would say that "Japan" is a sensitive issue in China, due to the fact that 20 million innocent Chinese civilians were butchered by the Imperial Japanese army during WW2.

So any kind of anti-China initiative involving Japan is going to evoke memories of WW2.

Now I don't consider the "Look East" policy to be anti-China, but many will have that perception.
