Supercomputers can simulate nuclear explosions, evolution of galaxies, effects of pacemaker redesign, genetics and genetic related diseases, etc.

KANPUR: IIT-Kanpur on Tuesday unveiled its second supercomputer, which ranks fifth in the country in terms of performance and is considered the best for educational institutions.

The machine, assembled at IIT-Kanpur by a team headed by the institute's deputy director SC Srivastava, was unveiled by him along with Ashish Dutta, head of the computer centre. They said the supercomputer would be used for regular education, research and training purposes.

"Supercomputers are used in many areas of science and engineering research," said Dutta. "The general area of research that uses supercomputers is called high-performance computing (HPC). HPC can simulate nuclear explosions, evolution of galaxies, effects of pacemaker redesign, genetics and genetic related diseases, medical drug discovery, aircraft flight, aerodynamics, etc."

He said the new supercomputer facility had come up at a cost of about Rs 48 crore.

The super computer has the peak performance of 307.2 Terra Flops and a realized performance of 294.9 Terra flop. The supercomputer has been ranked 130th in TOP500, an international list of the most powerful computer systems.

If the chipset is intel or AMD,we should have no pride. If india is to be a great nation,it must manufacture the chips by itself.

Agree to a major extent. And 130th in the world? Give me a break! Was surprised to learn yesterday that a country like India which has a glorious space/nuclear program imports set top boxes. Why have we been throwing precious foreign exchange away just like that? I&B minister calls for indigenization of set-top boxes to create jobs - The Times of India

What happened to those $100 billion fabrication units?

Yes indeed but as a matter of fact Intel powers over 80% of the total supercomputers! Even China manufactures its own set of processors but as far as their fastest supercomputers (and the world's fastest as well) is concerned - The Tianhe-2 supercomputer also runs on Intel processors only (32,000 Intel Xeon E5-2692 12C with 2.200 GHz 48,000 Xeon Phi31S1P)

Source(s) and Reference(s):- Intel® Many Integrated Core Architecture - Advanced
Tianhe-2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Moreover as far India in terms of manufacture of computer processors is concerned - The Intel India team in Bangalore has been doing the same for quite a few years - the first one being rolled out way back in 2008 (World's first ever six-core Intel Xeon Processor 7400 series was designed in India only). DRDO has been been manufacturing and using wholly indegenously designed and developed computer microprocessor series "ANURAG" in its project.

And the answer to your question lies in the wrong government policies - which in turn are being erected under Modi Administration!

Do you know Intel gives back door to NSA and US govt. Plus it is intel that makes it. Even Russians,Germans ,israeli and chinese have indigenous chip production capability .

Russians-90 nm Elbrus,65 nm Elbrus
German-90 nm
Chinese-32 nm (longson)
Israel-22 nm and 17 nm .

Why is india dependent on foreign source. Even Russian govt and military refrains from using foreign chipsets for their government PC's and uses Elbrus 90 nm monoblock by kraftway. Same is the procedure in many corporates that are moving away from US servers and US chipsets .Chinese companies want systems on longson. Russian companies want Elbrus 65nm monoblock systems and server systems. Even German companies are considering kraftway Elbrus monoblock PC and Elbrus made servers .

At this point ,looking at snowden leaks ,everybody is looking for alternatives.

Why India ?Modi should make it national priority for developing chips. Or else USA will continue stealing and patenting indian intellectual property via intel backdoors into indian systems. Remember when USA tried to patent several ayurvedic medicines and even basmati rice in 90's?

Tianhe-2 has been refused by the chinese military. Even Chinese military want supercomputers with longson chips 32 nm.

Works for me. Just Google 'DRDO Anurag Microprocessor' and you'll get all the information you need. And I agree with everything you've said. About time Science & Technology is made a priority by the Modi government. Hurts to see tiny nations like South Korea do so well and our own world class talent leave the country to work for foreign MNCs.

agreed with @Chanakya's_Chant

plus, not to mention,95% of these run on some Linux Version.it is not always mandatory to make everything by yourself,or make world's fastest, largest or greatest.we've no room for fancy.our agencies make which they need, not to get a rank in Top500 Magazine.

Please read through Snowden's leaks and the related information on wikileaks. You will change your opinion. I will say this. It is long overdue that india create indigenous chip capability. 90 nm should a minimum target. Even China has 32 nm and is comparable to israelis/americans. Indian indigenous chipset of DRDO, 1000 nm ,who kind of joke is this?.

Expert Says NSA Have Backdoors Built Into Intel And AMD Processors | eTeknix

Yeah ,if you want your intellectual property or defence secrets being stolen ,you are most welcome to use intel and AMD. NSA has backdoors built in and many european companies believe that these backdoors are also being used for industrial ,corporate and political espionage.

Like they say ,Caveat emptor.

did you read my post correctly??India can't build everything on his own,nor anyone ever tries to build one.plus, there is always "Backdoor","Industrial Espionage" and "Hacking".what do you think, that without these Chips, they couldn't break into system??with indigenous Chip, they'd break into it far easily, because it is not expected to compete with world's best.and what do you propose??until we build everything,we should stop making super computers??thats why Cyber Security is for.if you think that whole world knows this but choose to ignore, then they've find a way to block it.its not that much easy to exploit when there is a firm cyber security around it.

by the way, hackers around the world regularly try to hack super computers and most of the time gets their @$$ kicked.

I think you missed a very major point :

His reason is that the NSA finds “hacking” through backdoors significantly more simple than trying to crack encryption. For example trying to crack AES 256 bit encryption would require the power of 10 million suns to crack at the current TDP of processors. Steve Blank therefore claims that because cracking encryption is so infeasible the NSA uses hardware level backdoors instead. Steve Blank said that these suspicions arose when he saw the NSA could access Microsoft emails in their pre-encryption state and so he knew there was another way in.
Expert Says NSA Have Backdoors Built Into Intel And AMD Processors | eTeknix

Mr Blank said when he learned the NSA had secured “pre-encryption stage” access to Microsoft’s email products via the PRISM leaks, he recognised that “pretty much all our computers have a way for the NSA to get inside their hardware” before a user can even think about applying encryption or other defensive measures.

He said this may be why the Kremlin is returning to the use of electric typewriters. Russia’s Federal Guard Service, which protects President Vladimir Putin and Kremlin communications, says it was prompted to adopt type-writers by the scale and complexity of the NSA operations leaked by Edward Snowden.

Mr Blank is an expert in the ‘microprocessors’ or ‘chips’ inside every computer, having helped start two semiconductor companies and a supercomputer firm.
Intel chips could let US spies inside: expert
NSA can bypass encryption by hardware ,which again means that cybersecurity might be useless

Cyber Security? . Do you work in IT? and considering that so many corporates in cyber security and software development are in bed with NSA ,cyber security will be not of much use. And yes I propose that India goes into a JV with Israel or Russia for producing chips. Preferably Israel as they are a leader in this. Russia still has to catch up with USA,China,Israel in these terms. Though my experience with the Elbrus monoblock PC is pretty good.

The way India built and put resources to create nuclear missiles ,the same way resources need to be put in developing chips. And I have good reason to believe you work in IT or some american corporates, looking at your statements.

If Kremlin was so sure about cyber security ,it would not have returned to typewriters on interim basis. Right now, There is a massive program to deploy Kraftway Monoblock Pc(which uses Elbrus-2C+) in russian govt offices and russian corporate offices. Similiar thing is underway in China where govt is substituting local chipsets for foriegn ones. But China has a big advantage as it is very advanced in its fabrication capabilities.

@sovcomflot

I didn't miss any point.I'm related with this field and know about these exploits a bit.but these exploits can only can be performed only if one could access the supercomputer at physical level or very low level.what do you expect??some guys will launch a script and whole info of Supercomputer will be mailed to its account??even accessing these supercomputers without proper authority/terminal is extremely difficult.you can only access according to your clearance level and so on.don't gets paranoid.India has nothing to do with Russia and their systems and in India, those who are admins are all well acquainted about this kind of threat.you possibly don't know, but every computer systems has a backdoor created by developer or mistakenly never gets handled.hackers only try to exploit those.its not like some Die Hard scene where you click few buttons and whole country shuts down.same goes for Supercomputers as well.whenever they find a threat, they simply handles it.plus, these admins are counter hackers as well who tries to trace its ip and try to know whether it is spoofed or genuine and shuts its access and so on.if you're not related to this field, you couldn't possibly get the idea.
