Currently Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay, near Mumbai is the largest nuclear research centre in India, but new unit of BARC in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh will be 3 times larger than BARC, Trombay!!! The State Government has allocated 3,000 acres in the Andhra Pradesh special economic zone for the purpose.

TNN, Feb 22, 2011, 11.55pm IST

VISAKHAPATNAM: The new unit of the Baba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Visakha district, which is three times bigger than the one at Trombay ( Mumbai), will become operational in five years.

Delivering the address at the Nucar-2011 (Nuclear and radiochemistry) meet here on Tuesay, Prof P Rama Rao, chairman of Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS) in the department of automic energy, said the new BARC research centre in Visakhapatnam would be a suitable place to train the required manpower for the nuclear sector.

He stressed the importance of trained and efficient human resource for making the country's nuclear programmes successful. He said the universities must follow the practices of reputed universities like Harward University to meet the global standards.

BARC director Prof V Venugopal said initially a core group of scientists would function from the new unit at Vizag. He hoped the new centre would strengthen nuclear research activities.

Work on the second campus of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), coming up in the Atchyuthapuram mandal of Visakhapatnam district, is likely to begin later this year, probably by the year-end, according to sources. The State Government has allocated 3,000 acres in the Andhra Pradesh special economic zone for the purpose.

The first campus of BARC, at Trombay in Maharashtra, has been fully utilised and there is no room for expansion. Therefore, the second campus is being set up at Atchyuthapuram to take up research on nuclear energy primarily and also to take-up certain strategic projects. In the first phase, Rs 500 crore would be spent on developing the BARC campus.

Prior to setting up the major facility at Atchyuthapuram, BARC has started a small facility in Autongar here for electro-magnetic systems. Four groups have started research work at the facility.

BARC sources said isotope processing facility would be linked to the nuclear reactor to be set up in the main facility at Atchyuthapuram and isotopes would be supplied to hospitals and diagnostic centres for curing cancer.

The setting up of BARC second campus, it is said, will spur research efforts in Andhra University, Gitam University and other major educational institutions here besides creating job opportunities on a large scale for those engaged in science studies and research.

Most probably it will not be under IAEA safeguards because it will have both civilian and military research facilities.

No, they will not. If India wanted than with reserve we could have make much more nuclear weapons. But nukes don't give a guarantee of national security and integration but economy and conventional weapons do, its proved.

Gr8 development!!!! We should work on miniaturized nuclear engines for space planes.
Though India working on its own nuclear engine but Russia already offered us the technology. So its better if we work with them. :)

A very Good news indeed......

One of the best news. I think it will have next generation cutting edge facilities.

.
Great, looks like AP is going to become the research hub of India.

We already have Cyberabad, and now Vizag too :smokin:

Most of the new defence/space/nuclear facilities coming up in Kerala or AP and sometimes Karnataka or TN but what about other states. I don't remember anything new for other states.

Once the 'other' states re-locate themselves to South India they will also get their share

It is a pure strategic move as none of the South Indian states have any sort of violence/insurgency or near to borders of China/Pak.

BTW I myself prefer south, I love Bangalore. City of peace and development! :smitten:

it is strange that India is shifting its research centres on eastern side...
