What's new

India's First indigenous aircraft carrier to be launched this December.

Let's not go off topic. It would be fine to open another thread to compare F-22P with Shivalik. Shivalik is a good ship, no doubt.

Basic information about F-22P

F-22P Zulfiquar class frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No need to, because tF-22P is not a stealth frigat, but it's also not correct that China don't build any stealth vessels:

PLANs advantages lies mainly on their sub fleet and the numerical superiority, but they lack behind at stealth vessels and carrier fleets. With Chinas capabilities to fast develop and produce new arms and techs, I don't doubt that they will induct these in numbers soon too, but especially to operate a CBG will take years.

However, back to topic please!

IAC INFORMATION

The keel of India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) was laid by the Raksha Mantri at Cochin Shipyard on the 28th of February 2009. This major milestone of the IAC project underlined the commitment of the nation to acquire the capability to design and build these versatile and capable warships.

Credit for the achievements attained so far must be given to several organizations; to the Naval Staff who conceived and obtained approval for the project, to the Ministry of Defence who appreciated the need and gave the ‘go-ahead’, to the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design, who, despite shoestring resources and limited previous experience, evolved the design and are managing the construction programme successfully overcoming several obstacles that come their way, and not least, to the shipyard for showing flexibility and resourcefulness in transforming drawings and plans into what, in due course, will become a potent warship, giving the nation the capability to project power and exercise sea control over its vast maritime zone of interest.

It will be killer for The 67,500 ton ex-Soviet aircraft carrier Varyag (Admiral Kuznetsov class), with Bharmos :victory:

Is navy looking for E2D Hawkeye ??/ But yeah, having an AWACS and a smaller version of Boeing P8i on AC will be great.

Yes..IN is actually very impressed with E-2D..However since we dont have a carrier to fly this, the plan to acquire this has been kept on hold.

I think they are evaluating them for the shore based AWACS requirement as well, but while the E-2 is the most capable carrier AEW aircraft, we have other options for this role (G550 Phalcon AWACS, Embraer DRDO AWACS).

Looks quite good ... what is the time frame for IAC I and II completion after which they would start sea trials ....

Well IAC1 would be launched later this yr at around october

Earlier it was expected for launch in Dec 2010 , however a truck carrying critical equipment , met with an accident
So a replacement was ordered , which is expected for delivery in may 2011 , In the meantime cochin shipyard will get more of the fabrication work done on the carrier before its launch than was previously expected

As far as IAC2 is concerned
Well currently it is under design phase with construction beginning in 2012
IAC2 is expected to be a 50000 Ton CATOBAR (catapult assisted takeoff and arrested recovery) carrier capable of operating 40-50 aircrafts and capable to launching fighters using steam catapult

CSL, Cochin is building them with modern techniques like modular ship building method. It reduces time for building large complex warships like destroyers and carriers.

‘Indigenous aircraft carrier launch this Dec’

New Delhi: The construction of India's first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) at Cochin is expected to be completed in December this year, after which the warship will be launched, Defence Minister AK Antony said Tuesday.

Antony, in a written reply to questions in the Lok Sabha, said the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) had completed 75 percent of the hull work on the IAC, which is also known as the Air Defence Ship.

"Regarding the Air Defence Ship being constructed at CSL, 75 percent of hull work has been completed and is expected to be launched in December 2011, after which further works will be undertaken prior to commissioning," Antony said.

He said the augmentation of infrastructure at CSL was in progress and Indian-made hull quality steel was now available that will reduce the country's dependence on foreign sources.

"With the infrastructure and experience, indigenous aircraft carrier-sized ships can be built at CSL. Additionally, Indian-manufactures warship quality steel is now available, which will reduce dependence on foreign countries," he said.

Declaring India's intention of having at least two carrier task forces with aircraft carrier warships as the pivot of such battle groups, Antony said the country should be capable of deploying them on two locations soon.

"To maintain effective presence in our area of interest, Indian Navy should be capable of deploying carrier task forces in two geographically separated locations," he said.

The navy already operates the Centaur-class INS Viraat aircraft carrier. The refit and modernisation works on board the INS Vikramaditya, formerly Russian Navy aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, are progressing in an earnest manner, the minister said.

"Consequent to signing of supplementary agreements in March 2010, the Russian side has increased the manpower and material resources considerably for the (Vikramaditya) project. A majority of the equipment and systems have been installed on board the ship. The delivery of the ship is scheduled in December 2012," he added.
