As part of the Prime Minister’s flagship Make in India project, Indian Railways is all set to induct the first high-speed electric locomotive to its list of transport vehicles. The 12,000 horsepower high-speed electric locomotive will be flagged off from Bihar’s Madhepura loco factory by PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Here’s all you need to know about the locomotive and its launch.

Locomotive contract

The Indian Railways has entered into an agreement with France’s Alstome for 800 high-speed locomotives. The first five electric engines will be imported while the remaining 795 will be manufactured in the country over a period of 11 years.

Cost

The Rs 20,000-crore project includes the Rs 1,300 crore cost for setting up the factory at Madhepura and two loco maintenance depots at Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh) and Nagpur (Maharashtra), beside building 800 locos. The average cost of each locomotive is estimated to be Rs 25 crore.

Speed

The heavy-haulage locoswill have a maximum speed of 110 km per hour. India’s most powerful electric engine till now was of 6,000 horsepower(HP). With this induction, India will join an elite list of countries, including Russia, China, Germany and Sweden, that have 12,000 HP and above capacity electric locomotives.

Production

In the current fiscal year, five locomotives will be rolled out. About 35 locos will be manufactured at the Madhepura facility in the next fiscal (2019-20) and 60 in 2020-21. After that every year 100 locos will pe produced. The new locomotives are aimed at bringing down operating costs for the Railways and cutting down the greenhouse gas emissions.

Usage

The high horsepower locos will be pressed into service as freight trains. It will be used to transport coal and iron ore. This will help decongest saturated routes by improving the speed and carrying capacity of freight trains.

. . . . .
Its not high speed, its high power Locomotive.

@ 12,000 HP its one of the most powerful engines in the world.

THE most powerful locomotive is from Russia is with 17,838 horsepower, the Novocherkassk 4E5K locomotive. This is the most powerful Locomotive in the world.

Really what is the highest HP for Pakistan's goods train?I think it's not above 4500..Please clarify

You are right about the power of this freight loco.

The ES43ACi has a 12-cylinder 4 563 hp GEVO12 engine, and to cope with the harsh operating conditions in Pakistan the design features additional cooling capacity and an air-conditioned cab suitable for bidirectional operation.

Pakistan uses an average of 4000-4500 Hp for both freight and passenger locos.

LAHORE: The freight service of Pakistan Railways (PR) has received a boost with the addition of the first batch of ‘heavyweight’ locomotives to its fleet.

Equipped with the latest technology, these fully computerised locomotives of 4,000 horsepower (HP) each can haul up to 3,400 tonnes of load, use less fuel and are environment-friendly.

In Pakistan only 4%(close to) of freight is transported through railways now...this was many times higher earlier till 70's, this 4% average includes passenger traffic as well...now they uses long haul luxury inter city buses as Motorway system is good here and rest travel by private cars and other modes, including air.

Railways are more efficient and pocket friendly. Especially pakistan imports all its oil fuel.

pakistan must really expand its rail network and it should be relatively easy due to the shape of pakistan which is like a long bread. Your railway needs to run only from north to south.

You are right, railways are/were neglected here, now it is on the course of improvement, there is a mega project of up-gradation, making a broad gauge railway line crossing all the country from Karachi to Peshawar, this is an ambitious 8 billion USD project sponsored by China(CPEC)...other cities along the main corridor will also be connected.

excerpt from the article:

Upgrading ML-1 is an early harvest project of CPEC, for which the National Railway Administration of China and the Ministry of Railways Pakistan have jointly conducted a feasibility study.
CPEC’s official website quotes the project cost of $8.176 billion for rehabilitation and up-gradation of the Karachi-Lahore Peshawar (ML-1) Railway Track, with a length of 1,872kms. The first phase of $3.2 billion covers up-gradation of four segments.

The upgrade will bring the long-needed attention to railway transportation, which has deteriorated significantly over the past few decades. The Pakistan Railways carried over 70% of the national freight load in the 1970s, which now stands at a meagre 4%. Reportedly, the Pakistan Railways expects that this would grow to 20% after completion of this project with freight traffic increasing from five to 25 million tonnes per annum by 2025. The passenger traffic is also expected to increase by 45% (from 55 to 80 million passengers per annum).

Not true, Pakistan last year produced about 2.4 million bikes and 2 lacs cars, add to this few thousand buses and trucks. In addition to it about 65,000 cars(mostly expensive SUV's) are imported. Check Pakistan car and motorcycle industry here or on net. Also check Pakistan motorway system on net and on PDF...

Car and motorcycle vendor Industry in Pakistan, the deletion levels and localization of parts

There are almost 3000 Auto Parts-Manufacturers operating all over Pakistan, whereby this industry has created almost 3 million jobs and opportunities for respectable income, engaging 500,000 skilled workers as Direct Employees and 2.4 million indirect employees. It has generated a robust Investment volume of Rs.370 billion, and contributes revenues of Rs. 110 billion per year to the national exchequer. It has also achieved an Import substitution worth US$ 3.3 billion per annum and an Exports volume of US$ 210 million per annum. Pakistan is already the cheapest source in the world, for producing tractors.

This industry has already achieved a high level of localization, whereby it boasts: 75% localization in Cars & HCVs, 96% in Tractors, 96% in Motorcycles and 80% in Three Wheelers. Its products are being exported to; The European Union, USA, African Countries and all over Asia. The Annual production in 2017 (six months) had reached; 107,787 cars, 941,000 motorcycles and 3-Wheelers, 4,514 Trucks, 409 Buses, 32,641 Tractors.

Also last last 4 years PIA incurred 145 Billion loss.

This has nothing to do with people flying PIA domestically, yes some intl' routes(non profit) are curtailed.

Also Air Blue is the biggest local airline here, the others are Shaheen air, Serene air, Sial air...some smaller too.
