India's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on 22 June approved over INR200 billion (USD3.5 billion) worth of procurements and projects to plug long-pending operational voids for all three services.

Final clearances will be granted over the next few months by the Cabinet Committee on Security. Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials said the DAC also decided to discontinue the process of "nominating" Defence Public Sector Units (DPSUs) as exclusive providers of materiel and to make the procurement process more competitive.

Among the deals cleared by the DAC was the INR120 billion procurement of quick reaction surface-to-air missiles (QRSAMs) to equip eight army air defence regiments.
