NEW DELHI-The Indian government is concerned about Russia's potential deal of selling Mi-35s to Pakistan, similar to the Afghan model.
Senior Indian officials are closely monitoring Russian attempts to sell an unspecified number of Mi-35s to Pakistan, a move that would tear up a decades-old informal understanding between Delhi and Moscow against supplying Islamabad any material.
"By offering to sell military equipment to Pakistan, the Russians are, in all probability, trying to arm-twist India from sourcing its defence requirements from alternate suppliers," former Indian Navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash told IHS Jane’s. "Such tactics should not intimidate India's new administration."

Russia is exerting indirect pressure on India to buy from Russia. Since the Subject has been raised, I think Russia should sell there helicopters to Pakistan. Then India should relent on one or the other order to Russia. So whatever they gain, they loose it lost order from India.

Russia wants to keep its sell up, India is moving to western weapons, so russia has to find new customer. You can not tell someone not to sell when you reduce the purchase

Yes Russia's percentage of India\s defence budget is falling but in absolute terms the amount of revenue it will get from India will be increasing as India spends more and more on defence as its economy grows. The Russians are being greedy...

or Russia may not want stuck with one big customer, feeling to explore more ?

Well if that one big customer accounts for 70% of all you defence exports and is funding strategically significant defence projects for you (PAK-FA) and you are putting this all at risk for that customer's much smaller rival- it doesn't really make much sense.

Pure greed, the Russians are either unable or unwilling to accept the cold war is over and their monopoly on the Indian defence market is a thing of the past.

This is foolish article.

Russia has always sold Mi-17 helos from USSR's last years till date. We haven't said anything. It has sold RD-93 engines through China and T-80 series of Tanks through Ukraine to Pakistan. Our ties with Russia are strong. Of course it is not in our favour if they sell it to Pakistan, but then again, there are many decisions that we have taken that didn't exactly suit Russian geopolitical positions.

India has come out of the 'Moscow or Washington' era. Our government's focus is Indian era. We want to maintain strong ties with countries that can share a mutual benefit with our country but doesn't mean we favour or bow down.

Russians have the right to sell weapons to anyone, (especially gunships, which don't really up the ante against us), as much as we bought AH-64 from USA.

If we had an MCH program coming into existence like LCH is, we won't have bought it from either of them.

don't you think buying American weapons upsetting Russia, since you do not care about Russia's feeling then surely it will not care too

So what if they are upset? That is their own issues and expectation they need to address. Billions of USD of Indian taxpayer money should not be gifted to the Russians for sub-standard equipment just to keep them content. India isn't disadvantaging the Russians, it sets a level playing field and whoever can produce the product most suited to Indian requirements will be selected- if the Russians can't compete in a level playing field and let their products do the talking then they need to work on what they are offering not try and blackmail India into going back to them.

The Indians aren't stupid enough to fall for this tactic, the Russians NEED India (her purse more than anything else) and aren't going to throw it all away to sell to Pakistan.

It is the customer's prerogative to look elsewhere, but Russia is making more money than they have ever made from India, like I said they are just greedy and it is pathetic that they can't win on merit so they start resorting to these underhand methods of trying to arm-twist India. I doubt the GoI will give in, why should they?

The best decision India can make is "Refuse to get Arm-Twisted". Russia is not USSR and the instead of showing concerns about regional stability in South Asia it must first stabilize it's own backyard.

No nation relying on foreign-made defence platform can become a global power, indigenization is the need of the hour and we must continue on this path.

Russia is not going to get any benefits by poking India in her eyes.

Exactly, people of India elect the Union Government of India expecting that it will serve the interests of India and India alone.

I believe that Russia has stretched it little bit too far, Russia can never become USSR and the new resurgent India is nothing like the India of 70s.

All such incidence has given us chance to be self reliable in "that" thing......Good government in place, a nice defence policy in place PSU's willingness to share technology and private sectors ready to jump in i don't find any good time than this to rise and shine.
