WASHINGTON: India's decision to continue importing Iranian oil is a slap on the face of the United States, which is galvanising the international community to isolate Tehran, according to a former US diplomat who was Bush Administration's pointman on Indo-US civilian nuclear deal.

"This is bitterly disappointing news for those of us who have championed a close relationship with India. And, it represents a real setback in the attempt by the last three American Presidents to establish a close and strategic partnership with successive Indian governments," former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns wrote in an op-ed in current-affairs magazine 'The Diplomat' today.

"India's decision to walk out of step with the international community on Iran isn't just a slap in the face for the US - it raises questions about its ability to lead," said Burns.

India, which relies on Iran for 12 per cent of its oil imports, has refused to scale it down.

Only recently, Burns had written an op-ed in The Boston Globe arguing that the US should commit to an ambitious, long-term strategic partnership with India. "I remain convinced of its value to both countries and to the new global balance of power being created in this century," he wrote.

"With its unhelpfulness on Iran and stonewalling on implementation of the landmark US-India Civil Nuclear Agreement, however, the Indian government is now actively impeding the construction of the strategic relationship it says it wants with the United States," Burns said.

Presidents Barack Obama and George W Bush have met India more than halfway in offering concrete and highly visible commitments on issues India cares about, he said, adding unfortunately India has made no corresponding gesture in return for the big vision that Obama and Bush have offered.

. .
Its a tight slap on the face of fools who thing India is somebody's puppet or white men slave or India is being used againt xyz etc. etc.

.
If Mr. Burns can guarantee 12% of our national oil requirements at market global prices and ensure us a way to have access to CAR countries by bypassing Pakistan, then we will definitely consider their offer.

What say Mr. Burns? Accept our offer and we will accept yours. :) A win-win for both isn't it?

.
FK this ,our govt is already having to mange much losses managing oil subsidies.
Another 30 to 50% hike in prices is not something India is willing to Risk on Amreka's behest.

Indian foreign policy is of non alignment ,and one would be a fool to claim otherwise.

.
Indian government will be in trouble is fuel prices hike further.

We are in no business of slapping others, we just secure our interest like an independent nation. If that feels like slap to you then better get used to it.

.
US can dictate his term only those countries who except their money. USA is India's friend but not master. India has right to choose whatever is right for them.

.
All I Want To Say Is, It's A Good Decision By Govt Of India, There Are NO Friends Only Mutual Interest's..
Indo-US Relation is NO DIFFERENT.

.
burns must know that
strategic relationship with US is not equal to toeing US....
he does not know the difference between "partnership" and being a puppet....infact the entire US does not know this difference because all the countries it has so far called as allies are actually "puppets" rather than "Partners"

Partnership does not mean that we value your relationship while you don't value ours

A former US official says India’s decision to continue importing Iranian crude despite the recent Western sanctions on the Islamic Republic is “a slap” in the face for the United States.
Just a slap is not good enough... India should use shoes like what happened to George Bush...!!!:victory:

HAhahah why dont they tell China and Japan to stop buying oil????

They are forcing every one ... but India is bigger customer than Japan and Korea together I think so ..
If India pull back it will be bigger lose for Iran in this situation where they are not getting new customers.. any ways looks like after Sunday it will be impossible to do business with Iran as their banks will be cutoff from global financing network. Means there will be no ways to send money to Iran except gold in physical delivery ..
