People who understand Indian culture would understand that attitude, it is a last minute desperate appeal to awaken their humanity (if they have any left). It does act on some people left with a vestige of humanity.

No, I don't see what is so condescending about it. It is common sense. They are not asking the victim to glorify the rapist, but use any and every weapon in her arsenal to escape including appealing to their humane side. So what is condescending about it?

What has it to do with assurance of safety? Which country in the world has been able to provide that foolproof or ever in the history of human's existence? Indian parents and as do parents across the world take it on themselves to provide protection to their girls because no one else can be trusted.

Who is to know that it was not peer pressure or momentary lapse of judgement among one of the rapist that made him be a part of the act. Even if One had been won over to her side by her appeal, she would have had a better chance at survival.
