Dhaka, Sep 28 (IANS) Arvind, Indian textile maker and the world's largest manufacturer of denim, will set up a denim manufacturing plant in Bangladesh with an investment of $66 million over three years, officials in Bangladesh said.

The Indian company signed an agreement with the local Nitol Group here last Sunday to invest in Comilla Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) in the south-eastern region for producing exportable denim fabrics and denim trousers, said Nitol chairman Abdul Matlub Ahmad. He said the investment would be made in three phases in three years. 'Nitol Group will hold 20 percent of the stakes and Arvind the rest. I am hopeful that the formal operations of the company will begin within a year,' Ahmad said. He said more than 3,000 workers would be employed in the factory. We demanded 40,000 square metres of land in the CEPZ from the government. We, however, need more land for setting up the factory,' Ahmad added. He said this was the first investment in textiles by the local industrial conglomerate. Nitol Group is in talks with more Indian companies, he said. Ahmad, also the president of India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the present venture is expected to produce 13 million metres of fabric a month with a growth of 12 percent. Cheap labour, lower production cost and a burgeoning fabric market are among the factors why India wants to invest in Bangladesh, he said. Since we are already exporting 36 million metres of denim to Bangladesh annually, we have a ready market available and hence the proposed plant shall be profitable from day one, Arvind's chief financial officer Jayesh Shah said. Moyzuddin Ahmed, a member of Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority, and Aamir Akhtar, chief executive officer of Denim Fabrics of Arvind Textile Mills Ltd, signed a memorandum of understanding in Dhaka.

Good move. There are already good garment making factories in Bangla Desh. If they are assured of a steady supply of fabric they will find it easier to work without the headaches and costs of imports.

The news below is captioned from a Bengali newspaper named 'Amader Orthoniti' or Our Economy. It says that the 40,000 sq.metre land (20 plots) has been handed over to Arvind on 27th of this month. The main features of this news are as follows:

1) Investment: $66 million
2) Employment: local 3050, others 120 = 3,170 persons
3) Marketing: Export 60%, local consumption 40%
4) Expected date of Commissioning: A little more than 13 months from now

I am very hopeful of this plant. $66 million is quite a large investment. Not only that denim will be produced in BD itself, it will also create a positive atmosphere whereby many Indian and non-Indian factories will be encouraged to build production facilities in BD. Please note that very famous Japanese company UNIQLO is also in the BD RMG market.

Government needs to move fast and set up more SEZ. Its hard to find plot anymore. There are some EPZ in our western side of the country but no investor likes to go specially the foreign investor. I setup a small factory in Naogaon and its so easy to find worker there I never imagined before.

Good move for you. I imagine most new successful SEZs will be situated along the export highway corridors,

1. For now, from Dhaka to Chittagong as of now, Comilla SEZ (at Mainamoti) is on this highway. So is Mirsharai which is going to be the largest SEZ. Chittagong is of course one of the largest fully functioning container port in the Bay of Bengal.
2. In the near future, from Dhaka to Mongla port via Bhanga and Padma Bridge. There will be an SEZ near Padma bridge area where second river port will be placed for container logistics. SEZs further West such as Khulna will connect to Mongla which is a fully functioning container port as well.
3. In the long term, from Dhaka to Payra, which will, again, be another fully functioning container port. Payra itself will have a huge SEZ right at the port itself.
