India's Anti-Tank HELINA To Spawn Longer Range Strike Weapon

^^^
Abhi saali pehli to taiyaar nahi hai, why the hell we would go for 2nd ATGM ?? I mean 2 versions are ready, but we are still waiting for man-portable and then we have already decided for mk2 version which will have longer range.

There will be no man portable Nag, its scrapped and will be bought from outside most probably Javelin.

^^ There is a push to develop shoulder mounted NAG version. Dont know the advances made.

I am talking about that. There was a plan to do so but later scrapped. Instead they have focused on longer range version of Nag.

I read that somewhere too.. And the reason for being that we are phasing out the old Russian ATGM very soon. Javelin is definitely on the cards

People some where I read a second ATGM other than NAG is being developed. Is it true ? I tried searching but could not find even the material I first read

Here is a pic of Cannon launched guided missile (CLMDP), a new ATGM for the rifled gun of Arjun being developed at IRDE to replace the LAHAT which is the current ATGM with Arjun.

It will have more range, better seeker and a better attack profile!

Javelin range is 2.5km. Nag has 4km range. IA generals want more range for Nag, but are happy with the javelin range...very strange. I think by making changes in the Nag's propulsion, we can reduce its weight and make it man portable, but the question is will army allow such development?

I think the man-portable version is still going on as there were no reports of this being cancelled yet.

Actually most of the man portable ATGMs like Javelin or Spike-MR has 2.5 km range. Don't know why IA want DRDO to develop longer range Nag and buy man portable ATGM from abroad.

The man portable ones are of a different type of technology. For example, its not possible to convert the hellfire missile to a man portable missile. As a result, missiles such as Dragon and Javolin need to be developed independently. If India is looking to purchase foreign man portable missile from a foreign source, its most likely because it does not have plan to produce one or the domestic ones are still ages away from being a reality.

I think Javelin also has other versions like the one operated from special vehicle like nag operated from a NAMICA.

I think we should have gone for domestic man portable version because we have a huge need of that. Also javelin is very expensive, we should go for Spike which is much better and cheaper than Javelin. Javelin is just meant to appease US.

the ease of usage is better for Javelin than Spike
OK, i agree that Javelin more user friendly but using Spike is not too difficult, yeah are differences but still we have to go for a better system. We will be acquiring these ATGM in huge numbers and thats why we should go for cheaper one and when cheaper is also the best then i don't think we should think alot.

We have good ties with Israel. We could just conduct a yearly exercise between both forces where our forces can learn how to use Spike from them.
Apart from this many friendly nations like France, Germany, Singapore etc. are using Spike, they can also help us to train our forces to use this.

IA has many modernization plans for the coming decade and hence we should think about using our funds carefully. We are not that rich but we need rapid modernization, thanx to almost no purchases made during 80s and 90s.
1) SAM and other missiles upgrades which is going on (more than 5 billion$ purchase of Akash, Brahmos and Nirbhay in coming years).
2) MBT upgrades and future talks are on the table.
3) Artillery modernization is also needed.
4) Military Aviation needs both up-gradation and huge expansion
5) FINSAS
6) Future ICV is also among the cards as by the end of this decade they will also be in need of replacement.

I mean if you will calculate, IA will be spending huge sum of money on modernization. IA will be spending around 25-30 billion dollars or even more alone on 2 projects, FMBT and FICV.
