India's Anti-Tank HELINA To Spawn Longer Range Strike Weapon

India's Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) plans to extend the range of the HELINA (Helicopter-mounted Nag) anti-armour missile into a >20-km range strike munition. HELINA project director KS Vara Prasad has indicated that his team is building a "miniaturised inertial navigation package" to enhance the existing weapon without adding weight or too much cost.

The HELINA, an air-launched variant of the Nag anti-tank missile, has a range of 7-km and has been captive flight-tested, with a scheduled first firing for later this year. The programme director has also revealed that a feasibility study is officially on to integrate the HELINA onto the Rustom-H MALE UAV

How about if they can make a LAHAT style modification to Nags first so that our tanks can be 100% independent of foreign shells? That would serve more purpose than focusing on the range right now.

He has rehashed the presentation given by Dr. KS Vara Prasad at the Aero India seminar.... (Details can be found HERE)


About the future of NAG; these were the points Dr. Prasad made---

* Plans for N LOS type system.

* Range expected to go upto 15-20 km.

* Study on for integration with UAVs like the Rustom!

* Second version will have long range IIR seeker for exploiting full potential of the missile.


There was covert admission of the successful tests during the presentation; so a major mistake by Mr. Aroor !

Exellent, that's what I was waitong for, but I have the feeling that Helina could be ready earlier than our UAVs, so integrating the missile to the Israeli Heron UAVs, could be a good idea for the meantime.
Also develop a multi pylon fitted with several Henias for fighters as well, would be a good CAS weapon like British Brimstone, or the US JAGM:

Might not be possible, otherwise the Israelis had done it with their Spike missiles as well.

Perfecttttt.....It will be an Indian brimstone....added advantage low cost, more than a match for helfire missile, can be fired from all aircraft, bulk production......

People some where I read a second ATGM other than NAG is being developed. Is it true ? I tried searching but could not find even the material I first read
