One of the Scientist/Member of DRDO was fired for using word "Surya" while telling Press about Agni Missile. It was likely to be in 1999. He said "Surya 1" instead of saying Agni V.

Most Likely the project existed in the starting years but was closed down to pressure of US or so. All ready, Russian and US Intelligence has mentioned that India has capability to develop Missiles of around 8-10K Km within 1-2 Years.

So as per current scenario the Surya Project is closed File which could be open at any given time.
