Fasting is the only Gandhian, non violent way to get anything out of govt ! Do you suggest violent blood shed like in Egypt , Tunisia ?

I suggest constant demands and the odd one day strikes and protests - to say that you will not eat until the govt starts to listen to you( or you die )is classical description of blackmail.
And we are no longer living in gandhian times - the govt may have faults but it cannot be compared to the british for the simple reason that this govt is chosen by the people of our country and if it does not perform then it will no longer be in power.

I should thank Jana , for opeing this thread.

@Jon Snow, any one can voice against a elected government if it is not acting in the interest of the common man.
Its not needed that one be a elected official to say what the government is doing is not in the interest of the people.
And to the fact, Anna has shown a path, the Gandhian way to achieve what is required for the time for the comming generations.

some people are chosen as leader while some are born leaders...i will go for born leaders rather than shitty politicians whom people have chosen because they had no other option..

Unfortunate for you then cause you are an indian and in india only people who are chosen by the people will ever come to power ( kinda comes with the whole democracy package )

There is one way to make this correct. People should be educated of using 49O. This practice will make sure that shitty people do not become MLA or MP's

I said he's doing it for the right reasons but his means are questionable..... the government has won free and fair elections - that is to say that the people have chosen the govt - who has chosen hazare?? what he is doing is basically forcing the govt to act else he will continue his fast unto death - if the govt does listen to hazare and passes his version of the lokpal, then what is to stop shady characters like ramdev etc to use these same methods to force the govt to do what they want it to???

so the first person to be questioned should be m k gandhi.
secondly if the governemt is chosen by the people actually who voted. which in gross is hardly 50%

these are not gandian times - this is modern india where the govt is not a foreign invader but chosen by our own people - to think that the old methods still apply is completely wrong. And please I am not disputing hazare's right to protest or to raise demands but rather his methods which force the govt to act.

the time has come to a level when the government is required to be forced to act else we will see more rajas and kalmadis... i still wonder why the phuck i pay taxes.

coming to power does not mean going against will of people...it was anna who did fast to prevent changes in RTI act and hence we see better RTI act.

In the early 2000s Hazare led a movement in Maharashtra state which forced the state government to pass a stronger Maharashtra Right to Information Act. This Act was later considered as the base document for the Right to Information Act 2005 (RTI), enacted by the Union Government. It also ensured that the President of India assented to this new Act.[50] Law professor Alasdair Scott Roberts said:
The state of Maharashtra – home to one of the world's largest cities, Mumbai, adopted a Right to Information Act in 2003, prodded by the hunger strike of prominent activist, Anna Hazare. ("All corruption can end only if there is freedom of information," said Hazare, who resumed his strike in February 2004 to push for better enforcement of the Act).[51]
On 20 July 2006 the Union Cabinet amended the Right to Information Act 2005 to exclude the file noting by the government officials from its purview. Hazare began his fast unto death on 9 August 2006 in Alandi against the proposed amendment. He ended his fast on 19 August 2006, after the government agreed to change its earlier decision.

we the people elect these politicians but it does not mean we should seat back relax and enjoy...

Again and again I have to repeat - these are not Gandhian times - the govt is not a foreign invader but chosen by us. about the 50% voting - thats hardly the govt's fault is it?? its people like us who are too lazy to go stand in long lines to vote who should answer for that figure. - if you are too lazy to help decide who runs the govt then I hardly think you should have the right to tell this govt what to do.

one day strikes will only harm the economy of our country..while fast will not harm our economy in anyway..
another gandhian way of protest was asahkar andolan..but as you have said this is our own country which is lead by our own people then why use such methods which will only weaken our country?? i do not find anything wrong in fasting as a weapon against ill-doings of government..

if the Gandhian way is obselete, can you kindly suggest some thing that we can use against the corrupt government.
Elected government does not mean that no one should question their actions. So i think your suggestion is to call for a bandh and make sure the sick do nto get medicin on the day and die.
Fasting has and will always be the better way to make sure people in power listen to you for the right reason.
Fasting is not only for making the Invaders have a shiver in the spine but also to the as* holes in power

You think that fasting is blackmail technique. Public strikes and protests are not!! :undecided:
What if your demands are not met even after strike and protests?

Anna is all well and good and his motivations are all noble - but his methods at least in this case are wrong - whats to stop people like ramdev who just care for themselves and their own political ambitions to use these same methods against the govt if hazare succeeds.

I suggested constant demands and the odd one day protest which will not have a huge impact on the economy( thus cannot be called blackmail ) but will bring in the media and that is what matters. this is the media era not gandhian.

who included chemists and hospitals in strikes - they should always be left out. and every method will have consequences - gandhian involved people protesting against the british and to boycott govt jobs, colleges etc - leaving thousands of people with no access to education and no jobs hence no livelihood.
