Indians Made A Dam For The Afghans, So They Carried A 100m Tricolor To Express Gratitude

India and Afghanistan have found a moment of warmth for the reconstruction of the Salma Dam, almost a decade after it began.

India started constructing the war-ruined Salma Dam in western Herat province, the biggest project by the Indian government in the war-torn country in 2006.

After the $300 million project got completed, the 20-km long and 3.7-km wide dam reservoir with a storage capacity of 640 million cubic meters, began filling up much to the delight of the Afghan citizens.

The residents of the western Herat province were full of praise and expressed their gratitude by carrying a 100m Indian flag on the streets.

People took out joyful processions, beat traditional drums, sang Bollywood songs and even presented flowers to workers of the consulate.

The completion of the long-awaited dam is of massive importance to Afghanistan and will solve the issue of electricity generation in the country.

India-built reservoir at Afghan Salma Dam begins filling up

Salma dam was originally constructed in 1976 on the Hari river basin, but was damaged early during the Civil war in Afghanistan. The reconstruction of the dam was first initiated by an Indian company (WAPCOS Ltd.) in 1988, but the project was left incomplete for a significant period of time due to the ongoing instability caused by the civil war. In 2006, India committed to funding the completion of the Salma Dam at an estimated cost of $200 million.

Apart from Salma Dam - India is involved in the construction of the Afghan Parliament Building - to be completed by year end -

And of course the most important one -

Route 606 or Delaram-Zaranj Highway (A71) is India's most significant infrastructure investment in Afghanistan. It was constructed at a cost of USD 135 Million (INR 6 Billion), financed fully by development grants from the Government of India - designed and constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

Over 300 BRO engineers and technicians were deployed on the project, accompanied by 70 Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel for their security as the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) refused to secure it.

135 people working on the road were killed in insurgent attacks during its construction from 2005-09, including 129 Afghans and 6 Indians. Two BRO employees and 4 ITBP personnel were among those killed.

India needs to further expand it to 900 km Chabahar-Zaranj-Delaram-Hajigak line - a rail link from Chabahar to Zaranj to evacuate iron ore from the Hajigak mines being developed by Steel Authority of India.

If you have no experience with actual real life....you don't have to comment on things as big as "foreign policy". Blowing smoke over nonsense issues doesn't make you look smart. Its pretty obvious you have no clue about foreign policy and a good, respectful gesture of a 100M Flag!!!!

Just for the record, I wrote a lengthy article today on here where I told the Pakistani members that the reason Indians are getting ahead in the US, was due to India's successful foreign policy. Take a look at the trend, the Sundar's, Bhushan (in GE, upcoming, very sharp guy and a personal acquaintance), Ms. Indra's of the worlds....ALL got to shine because they were in the US. I don't know how upward their career would've went if they remained in India. I am sure, they'd make headlines there too, but not what they've accomplished in the US. And that was possible due to India's foreign policy.

Now what I think you are trying to misquote me on, is when you or someone else made a comment about how Pakistan couldn't get any weapons if India didn't want to. That is when I explained that Pakistan's civilian government has made strides (emphasis on the word Civilian, as Pakistan usually has a military rule and no foreign policy). The Russians, the French and the US have decided to de-hyphenate India and Pakistan. So the Indian pressure hasn't been working and in that regards, the foreign policy of Pakistan is successful ONLY relevant to this one issue as India can no longer dictate who should do business with Pakistan. Pakistan's foreign policy is showing results. But its nowhere close to India's as just population and economy wise, India is a much larger country.
