In one of the more surprising ballots cast at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday, India joined 127 countries in opposing US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Social media, particularly Twitter, was abuzz with reactions to the UNGA vote, with India’s vote polarising opinion in the subcontinent.

A member of parliament of the ruling Bhartya Janta Party (BJP), Subramaniam Swamy called the decision a ‘huge mistake’.

India has made a huge mistake by not voting with US and Israel on US decision to choose West Jerusalem as location for its Embassy. At present UN holds holy city of Jews as partitioned. West Jerusalem is Israel's. Hence Embassy can be there

The decision obviously hit a nerve with some.

UNGA: It’s a shame that India voted against the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This is like backstabbing Israel, our truest friend. The least we could do is abstain from voting for or voting against.

We didn’t vote for such a spineless Govt.

Some even went as far as to call India’s vote a ‘betrayal’.

Israel supported India:

-During Kargil
-On Kashmir In UN
-Intelligence sharing/ against Pak
-Lobbying for India in US

India betrayed Israel:

- voted against the creation of Israel in the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
-voted against Jerusalem as Israel's Capital

Quite a few even wondered why India didn’t take the safe route.

Gappistan Radio@GappistanRadio

Why can’t India just abstain from UN resolutions related to Jerusalem. Do the Indian thing, do your best to avoid taking a stand on a controversial issue

Obviously, there was no dearth of those vilifying the decision.

It’s a monumental shame that India voted against US and Israel on the question of Jerusalem at the UN today. It’s time to back two or three state solution without feeling ashamed to stand by our friend and ally Israel.

Many were still trying to make sense of the decision.

A rare moment of South Asian solidarity - India Pakistan and Bangladesh vote against the Jerusalem move in the UN. Gandhi, Jinnah and Mujib would be proud. Well done.

It surely added to India’s popularity in Pakistan, even if for a short time.

People are entitled to have their opinion cant be generalized as India's opinion. Yes Israel is a time tested ally for India and personally I support peaceful resolution of this issue.

After all, we are all human beings.

. .
I don't get India's statement of saying israel is India's best friend... if anything: Israel and news are the closest to Muslims by religion... the Torah speak even most strictly against idols than even the Quran. All the prophet's of the Torah are Muslim Islamic prophets. Even the Jewish law is almost identical to shariyah law.

Pakistan should make peace with Israel.... Leaves Israel with no real link with Israel.

FYI...

.
This shows that Indian policies are erratic and anyone can be backstabbed.

That is what I learned from the Indian vote and US and Israel can never trust India.

.
well this is what Uncle sam will get in return for trusting India in the long run.

India does not in the past or will support any USA cause that it deems not beneficial for India. If the yanks think India will go to war with China over Yanks then are so so so stupid.

Israel learnt its lesson from India now its USA turn.

India is having so diverse opinion that you will find good number of people to die for Pakistan too....Does that mean, Gov will follow their sentiments?? Of course no...

People are provided to express their opinion within the limit of constitution..But that does not mean, GOI will follow the sentiments of lunatics to frame foreign policy...

Well atleast Indians are smart enough to look after their own interests.

India could have abstained like Canada. Middle East is not our business, we should stay out of it.

I agree. We should have abstained rather than give opinions on matter that have very little to do with us.

OTOH India might have been offered something in return for our votes by interested parties. Such votes are always for sale to the highest bidder.

US has just shown its inability to bid anymore and is ceding ground as a global power. The world would take note.

. . .
unlike Pakistan, india is clever enough to realize that foreign relations are only based on interests and equal grounds and not master slave relationship like pak china friendship which led pakistan surrender many things to china to 'keep friendship alive' and receive 'lahore metro trains' as bribe or compensation.

Not sure what you are saying...

do you mean that we buy billions of dollars of high tech defence equipment from Israel?

Yes we do.

We pay them hard cash for it.

We never agreed to sell votes to them in exchange. We will vote as we see fit in the interests of India.
