OTTAWA/NEW DELHI: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wardrobe of traditional Indian clothing has been ridiculed by locals, with some accusing him and his family of playing ‘fancy dress’ during their visit to India.

The tour has been overshadowed by suggestions of a lukewarm reception by the government and a series of photo ops featuring the Trudeau family in coordinated Indian attire that have raised eyebrows in both countries.

The controversy came as the Trudeau family’s ornate traditional Indian attire raised eyebrows, with the prime minister at one point donning formal wear typically worn by bridegrooms.

His choice of clothing has raised eyebrows among Indians on social media, who described the Prime Minister’s attire as “fake and annoying”.

It comes after Mr Trudeau attended a Bollywood gala on Tuesday where he wore gold-embroidered Indian formalwear to meet prominent members of India’s film industry, including revered actor Shah Rukh Khan.

The Bollywood star wore a conservative suit to the meeting, as did most other Indians in attendance.

“FYI we Indians don’t dress like this every day sir, not even in Bollywood,” tweeted Indian politician Omar Abdullah.

His tweet garnered massive response, as many other Indians agreed with him.

Earlier this week, Trudeau rejected suggestions that he had been snubbed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Modi tweeted a welcome to Trudeau late on Thursday, on the eve of a bilateral meeting between the two, six days after the Canadian leader arrived in the country, adding: “I hope PM @JustinTrudeau and his family had a very enjoyable stay so far.”

Not really, him and his family are showing appreciation of the culture. They should be overjoyed.
People who come with good intentions will always be treated nicely. But those who come to impress 'Khali' stan terrorists will receive some hate.
Can't please the Indians. Always screaming and hooting like baboons.
That's coming from a Lankan, who treat a foreign dignitary especially a nation's chief like this.

Too bad he wasn't killed then. He and his mother were a curse.

The LTTE got the son, the Sikhs got the mother.
Whatever that be. The thread is not about that.

Be glad he was not killed by Sri Lankan army personnel, if he died in that attack, it will be seen as a declaration of war, so. You can imagine what will happen to an Island-sized half of Tamil Nadu.

he simply overdid it. Its like me telling a bengali that I only eat fish 24/7 to earn their attention. When you fake some things it really has the opposite effect.

white ppl have always taken desis to be emotional fools, just talk their language or wear their dress then screw them.

.
No he should have worn these instead

What would have happened? Indians would have cried and moaned hopped up and down and then gotten silent again. Or at most would have lost 2000 of their personnels who died without fighting ANY WAR in 2002 stand off.

Really, because the LTTE blew up Rajiv Gandhi and India did nothing. In fact, Indian soldiers ended up becoming fertilizer for Sri Lankan soil.

You can thank the Sri Lankan army, and friends of Sri Lanka like Pakistan and China for defeating the Tamil Tigers and bringing some justice to your dead ex-PM and your dead soldiers.

That happened in India sunshine. It was our responsibility. And your own soldiers ended up more or less the same.

I don't see any relation to all that to great Sri Lankan Hospitality to a foreign head of state.

While abusing Indians over an issue over Trudeau, I just gave you a shot back to reality, now you are shamelessly trying to defend it with LTTE theories. poorly-trained soldiers or Sri Lankan armed forces abused head of state, with that history at hand, you are complaining about Canadian PM's alleged ill-treatment.
