Taxpayers will be forced to foot the bill for the more than 250 foreign athletes and officials who have remained in Australia after the Commonwealth Games ended in April.
It has been reported that figures released at a Senate hearing have showed that of the 8013 people who arrived to attend the Games on the Gold Coast only 7848 have left.
It has been estimated that 205 of those who arrived on special visas have since applied for refugee status and remain in the country lawfully. There are 50 who are unaccounted for.
The largest number of visa applications have come from Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria, while athletes and officials from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and several African countries have also applied to stay.
The Daily Telegraph has reported that the cost of processing the refugee claims will run into millions of dollars with each application to cost as high as $10,000.
Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton admitted on Today that his hands were tied over
“If you’re on a bridging visa there can be benefits including welfare available and some of the cases can go on for a period of time,” Mr Dutton said.
“This is one of the great frustrations that I have. We have an incredibly generous legal system in terms of the ways in which people can apply.
“They can appeal, they can delay and it can go on and on.”
Mr Dutton said border force security were working hard to track down the missing athletes.
“If people go to ground they’re difficult to find but there will be a lot of work done with the state police forces to try and identify where these people are,” he said.
“It won’t be easy but they’ll pop up.”
