"Indian Virus Looks More Lethal Than Chinese, Italian": Nepal PM's Attack

After a "new map" claiming parts of Indian territory, Nepal Prime Minister KP Oli has delivered a new shocker in his offensive against India. Virus from India "looks more lethal" than Chinese and Italian, Mr Oli said in a speech in parliament, blaming India for the spread of coronavirus cases in his country.

"Those who are coming from India through illegal channels are spreading the virus in the country and some local representatives and party leaders are responsible for bringing in people from India without proper testing," Mr Oli said in his speech in Tuesday, his first in parliament since a major health scare.




"It has become very difficult to contain COVID-19 due to the flow of people from outside. Indian virus looks more lethal than Chinese and Italian now. More are getting infected," said the Nepal PM, in comments that have baffled New Delhi and outraged officials in India.

This has escalated the rift between India and Nepal over a new road inaugurated by India.






In the same speech, his first in parliament since a health scare, Mr Oli also said Nepal would "bring back at any cost" the Kalapani-Limpiyadhura-Lipulekh area, which is part of Indian territory.

Recently, the Nepal cabinet had endorsed a new political map incorporating Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani, which are part of Indian territory.



India and Nepal share a 1,800 km (1,118-mile) open border. The Lipulekh Pass is claimed by Nepal based on the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli it entered with the British colonial rulers to define its western border with India.

Kathmandu also claims the highly strategic areas of Limpiyadhura and Kalapani, although Indian troops have been deployed there since New Delhi fought a war with China in 1962.



After a new road was inaugurated on May 8 by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh connecting the Lipulekh pass in Uttarakhand with Kailash Mansarovar route in China, Nepal has protested against it and is also considering putting up a security post in the area.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said the road going through Uttarakhand''s Pithoragarh district "lies completely within the territory of India".



It had said that the road follows the pre-existing route used by the pilgrims of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. "Under the present project, the same road has been made pliable for the ease and convenience of pilgrims, locals, and traders," the foreign ministry said.

Pakistan and China must make Nepal understand that Nepalis serving in Indian Military is not acceptable and any future conflict will pose threat to Nepal unnecessarily. Therefore, Nepal must ban its citizens from serving Indian Army both in Fighting and Non Fighting capacity.

They can't repeat Sikkim stunt, this is a different era we are living in now.

True, but India is damaging it's relationship with the only country besides Bhutan and Maldives which normally take India's side.

Nepal I think was not taking any sides!- It was doing what it needs too, for her own interests. Nepal will sure still take India's side in the future as well, once the politics parts are addressed.

Nothing is sure, including China getting cozy will make any difference as well. It all depends on how the politics plays out- Indians are better politicians than China!- dont you agree?

The dynamic of politicking in the sub continent is different compared to that of China and East Asia.

In the context of the sub continent, Indian politicians are better at manipulating the public (the whole point of being a politician is to manipulate the everyday folks) and getting what they want. Whether these individuals we elect have our best interests truly at heart the whole time during their tenure is debatable.

Sometimes I think that our people don't deserve democracy until they're are educated and can make up their own minds rather than believe in what the politicians tell them.

You see the way it is now the guys who wins is usually the guy who is able to make big promises and is convincing enough to get people to believe in him, even if it is for the duration of the campaign to the polling station

Also to add- A formal system of democracy, though enshrining the principle of majority rule, doesn't take into account the way that voters can be manipulated by political parties and special interest groups into voting the way they want them to. In virtually all democratic societies, most voters are shockingly ill-informed regarding the main political issues of the day. This makes them all the more vulnerable to just the kind of blatant manipulation by political and corporate elites that is becoming more widespread in our time.

I wasn't lumping China with east asia intentionally, it slipped my mind for a second the China = CCP.

Actually our democracies aren't perfect you're right, democracy with strong elements of oligarchy and aristocracy is what it truly is. What I'm trying to say is nobody is to blame other than normal people like you and me because we apparently it seems always vote while looking at the short term picture instead of the larger one.

I can't stress this enough the only hurdle between development and the sub continent is none other than education. We have honest, hard working people but we lack education to harness the good qualities of our public effectively.

Take any problem the sub continent faces and eventually you'll find that the root cause of the issue is a lack of education.
