Indian underage brides 'at 44%'

Child marriages remain an ongoing problem in India
Nearly half of Indian brides wed before they are 18-years-old, the legal age for marriage since 1978, a survey by the Lancet medical magazine says.

Carried out from a geographical and social cross-section of Indian society, the survey says that a total of 44.5% were married by the time they were 18.

It says that women who were child brides were far more at risk of having unwanted pregnancies.

Marriage at a young age carries grave health consequences, it says.

'Unacceptably high'

"Child marriage has serious consequences for national development, stunting education and vocational opportunities for a large sector of the population," says the paper, led by Anita Raj, a doctor at Boston University School of Public Health in Massachusetts, quoted by the AFP news agency.

Children in rural India are more likely to become young brides

Researchers collated data from a national family health survey that was carried out between 2005 to 2006 in India.

The survey involved 22,807 Indian women who were aged between 20 and 24 at the time of the survey.

India first introduced laws against child marriage in 1929 and set the legal age for marriage at 12 years. The legal age for marriage was increased to 18 in 1978.

Correspondents say that while the practice of child marriage has slowly diminished, it remains unacceptably high among rural, poor and less educated girls and and among those from central or eastern regions of the country who are more vulnerable to the practice.

The survey says:

  1. Child brides are 37% more likely not to have used contraception before their first child was born
  2. Seven times likelier to have three or more births
  3. Three times likelier to have a repeat childbirth in less than 24 months
  4. Fifty percent likelier to have an abortion
  5. Six times likelier to seek sterilisation
  6. The researchers say that existing policies and India's economic development gains have failed to help rural and poor populations eradicate child marriages.

They say that the reason why there are such high levels of sterilisation among young brides is because they have had their desired number of children at an earlier age.

But they say it was also indicative of inadequate fertility control, evident from the high numbers of unwanted pregnancies among the women.

They warned that sterilisation could reduce condom use in such couples, which would heighten the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Compared to a similar survey 10 years ago, the child bride proportion has fallen slightly but the Lancet report said the reduction was insufficient.

uncle he is talking about Underage marriages and you are talking about underage pregnancy rate

@ topic

i am shocked to hear that and i don't think this figures are correct. 44% is too much and a country having cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Gujarat it is not easy to believe such a high percentage of underage marriages. It is possible this survey was done somewhere in poor areas where it is common to marry girls in such an early age but i don't think its accurate for all of india

India is one of the minority few who have marriageable age for girls as 18. A lot of countries have the female marriageable age as 16. That includes Iran, Iraq, Thailand, (though I hate to bring it) Pakistan and most of the West. So what's interesting and comparable would be the percentage of marriages of girls under 16.

Rather than working to solve this problem or providing suggestions, lets compare Pakistan and India statistics to see where there are more underage brides.

Zaki, the point Creder was trying to make was that underage pregnancies is more of an indicator of the general female health well being in a country than underage marriages.

In India many communities, especially in the rural East follow the concept of Gauna where the married woman is allowed to go to her husband's age only after a certain period after the marriage. So naturally the woman will conceive later though she was married earlier.

.
Lets take the figure of girls that got married at 16 and take that off the total sum and i bet the the figure is no where near 44%........getting married at 16 does not make you a underage bride.

Real India is different from Bollywood hyped one.

But I am impressed by the BRAND MANAGEMENT of India.
