At least six civilians have been killed and dozens more have been injured after New Delhi’s paramilitary forces opened fire at protesters in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The fierce clashes erupted after stone-throwing protesters stormed polling stations during a by-election in Budgam district near the main city of Srinagar on Sunday .

Paramilitary troops fired bullets and shotgun pellets as thousands of protesters shouting slogans against Indian rule charged into voting booths in the troubled area.

Shantmanu, Kashmir's chief electoral officer said that protesters tried to snatch or damage electronic voting machines in at least a dozen places.

"Violent protests happened at many places in Budgam. Protesters damaged and snatched EVMs (electronic voting machines) at some places," said Shantmanu, who uses only one name.

"It was not a good day for all of us. Six civilians were killed and 70 were wounded," the official added.

"There were more than 200 incidents of violence...which included stone-pelting, petrol bomb attacks, setting ablaze of a polling station," Shantmanu noted

Hospital sources in Srinagar confirmed that many were grievously injured with bullets fired by police and paramilitary troops.

Pro-independence factions in Kashmir had called for a boycott of the vote. The boycott resulted in heightened security and low voter turnout as the polling began.

Figures show only 6.5 percent of voters turned out to cast their ballot, the lowest ever participation recorded in any election in the disputed territory. At least 70 polling stations were shut due to the violence.

The by-election is being held to fill a vacant seat in the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of parliament. The seat had fallen vacant after a lawmaker resigned to protest the killing of civilians during unrest last year.

The Muslim-majority region has witnessed an increase in mass protests and violent attacks since early July 2016, when Burhan Wani, a top figure in a pro-independence group, was killed in a shootout with Indian troops.

Thousands of government troops have been deployed to the region and nearly 90 people have lost their lives and more than 12,000 wounded in the ensuing crackdown.

The government crackdown has failed to halt the protests against the Indian rule in Kashmir.

Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan but claimed in full by both since the two partitioned and gained independence from Britain in 1947. The two countries have fought three wars over the disputed territory.

the picture doesnt really do them justice.
There is something new to this news if you have noticed the news is from an Irani official site and it says protester so the world view about Kashmir is changing. This is a real progress and and result of Pakistani diplomacy. I can already see India on the losing end here.

Hypocrisy of India government commit atrocities on Kashmir at the same time used Dalia Lama to condemn China on the lie of China government committed the atrocities on Tibet.

Horrible that the stone throwing protesters were killed.

.
Even after warnings, they are causing disruption in peace of the society. These stone pelters should be dealt with Iron fist.
But I agree, the government action should be multifold. How come so many are there unchecked? Government should introspect and take necessary action.

well said..
These Jihadi supporters seems to think they are getting "good" publicity. what they have not realised is the fact that the world is sick and tired of their religious fanaticism and does not give a crap what happens to them. if one has to be blunt, the world is glad if these religious fanatics meet the wrong end of a bullet...

I can't believe that anyone can still remain so naive to think these Fascists are getting any sympathy..
Anyone throwing stones (look at the size of them) and then want security forces not to take retaliatory action. They are plain stupid.

.
We don't mind the international attention, anything that promotes our case better is for the advantage...

Stone pelters\jihad's operating under proxy attack army personnel and the army personal stay mute spectators.

The ^headline does not go too well does it! We know who is providing the key behind these dolls...
If we know who is keying them, then why are they not eliminated? Road accidents are very frequent in busy roads and too in the wee hours.

.
There is a huge RandiRona brigade among our political parties that gives patronage to these terrorists and their sympathisers..Add the accountability every section of our govt has to parliament, it becomes impossible to plan what you are saying.

Of course there is another matter of victims taking things into their hands.
The Pandits are justified to do this and I wonder why they don't? There are lot of these jihadis in delhi who roam around giving speeches. The Pandits must respond in kind for the genocide they were subjected to...
Media attention. Only the minorities in our country gets the media attention. I have not seen even a single media house talking about Kashmiri Pandits with the zeal they talk about 1 or 2 stray incident of some mad people killing one muslim because of some illegal trade.
I hope things change soon and people understand that more the delay, more will be the loose and more difficult to control the situation.

There is a thread already running in the Kashmir section.
