Indian student who fled Australia after deadly car crash arrested in India - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Indian authorities have arrested a man who fled Australia after a car crash that killed a pedestrian and seriously injured another in Melbourne five years ago.

Indian student Puneet Puneet, 24, was charged over the crash that killed visiting 19-year-old Queensland student Dean Hofstee as he walked down City Road in Southbank in 2008.

A speeding car slammed into him and his friend Clancy Coker outside a city hotel.

At the time, Puneet was a learner driver and it is alleged he had been travelling at 150 kilometres per hour in a 60kph zone and had been drinking.

Mr Coker was also seriously injured in the incident.

Puneet pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable driving and later fled the country while on bail in 2011.

He was arrested and faced court in India yesterday where he was remanded in custody.

A date is yet to be set for his extradition.

Running to India was a bad move, Indian prisons are FAR worse than Australian ones.

its hard to find this kind of stuff isnt it? inspite of the fact that india has one of the largest diasporas, their crime rate is proportionally too low.

lets give a hand to the 50 cent army Lt.Raphael for digging up this article
