I knew this is the only period you care about. The "Kabul Shahi"...a couple hundred years of Brahman rule....which in comparison to the rest of the Indus Valley's history is minuscule in nature.

since no mauryan palace which is recorded in history as very amazing in architecture and even the chinese buddhist pilgrims were amazed on its carvings exist, it leads me to believe that even indian palaces were wooden and stones were used very rarely.

They were, though they dont exist now and degraded, relief images and rock cut cave architecture(influenced by wooden designs) give clue. We also have citations from Greeks, Romans of the cities of India then.

Reliefs from the successors of the Mauryas (Satavahanas, Sungas)

To full blown cities with gates large enough to fit elephants, chariots, walls, etc.

One of the most interesting are the multi-story buildings which were very common in the cities.

One of the most interesting parts of the cities was the many of the structures were multi story.

hinduism somewhat retarded growth of indian architecture, they started using heavy stones instead of bricks formerly used by buddhists, they throw away concept of vaulting and using arches, always used corbelled or fake arches for fear of true arches, which buddhists applied freely and which was then transported to myanmar. instead of using bricks sculptures they resorted using tough stones like granite to cave sculptures, hindu architecture got smaller and smaller in size with the passage of time. this hindu technique of avoiding true arch and use heavy stone was thn taken up by cambodians and indonesians.

hindus couldnt make big temples because of using heavy stones instead of bricks

i think myanmar with their vaulted temples exceeded indian architecture by learning from indians themselves and made magnificent temples in bagan in the 10-12th century..
Guess how much is the weight of the granite block on the top? It is estimated at 60-80 tonnes!

But the best of these structures is not in south asia but indo-china.

Can you build them now given the modern tools?
these are 3D printed stone monuments built by machines not by humans.

One day we will meet our makers ...................the aliens.

I don't care what some other people say, nowhere else in the world can you find art and architecture so complex, intricate, and advanced that still survives to this day as you can in India. These architectural wonders are unique to what is now modern-day India, and cannot be found anywhere else in South Asia. The pictures shown in this thread are only a fraction of what Ancient Indians built. Today, you can find examples of 2 to 3 thousand year old architecture in almost every state. There are also countless more structures that have been destroyed over the past thousand years. This is why I say modern day India is the center of civilization in South Asia. Nowhere else in the region can you see the steady progress of civilization for thousands of years standing almost untouched. Modern day India is to South Asia what the PRC is to East Asia. That is not to say I do not respect the progress and contributions other South Asian countries made to subcontinental history.
