Indian soldier in Kashmir turns on unit, kills four
AP

SRINAGAR: A soldier in Indian-administered Kashmir opened fire on his own unit, killing four fellow soldiers and wounding one other, an army spokesman said.

Indian army spokesman Lt. Col. J.S. Brar said the man sprayed his unit with automatic weapon gunfire Thursday morning. He was later arrested.

The soldiers were part of an anti-insurgency unit in Punjpora, a village 28 miles south of the region’s main city of Srinagar.

The state has been swarming with Indian soldiers since the start of a separatist rebellion in 1989 seeking the region’s independence from India or merger with Pakistan.

There have been similar incidents in the past attributed to the stressful conditions the troops work under, including long hours under extreme weather conditions.

Simply why would he do that?
If he had some problem, why kill others or were they conspiracing for some part?

I seriously hate politics. RIP.

seriously, the "mental depression" is a serious problem....The family back grounds must be screened along with them before inducting so that the army could reduce the combat stress of the person...

You are not in a situation where you are pushed forcefully for killing innocent people of the land which the country of your origin has occupied coupled with stressful treatment of the country who has sent you for that job.

many stress factors there

Could have been frustrated after having been denied vacations. We have had similar issues in the forces earlier, but this one is grabbing more international attention because of the location.
Thorough investigation is due and lets wait for the reports.

What it has to do with family background ? the domestic issues are not that big which force you to either kill your own officers and colleagues or commit suicide

Oh stop reading too much into such incidents. No one is holding a gun to his head asking him to shoot innocent people as you guys make it out.

That certainly is not a stress factor Jana... Ill explain it you before you jump into an un wanted conclusion here...In India, the army which moves to Kashmir have a low rate of Meeting there families and Beloved, Over the period of Years the morale come gradually down, we call such soldiers, "distraught Soldiers", Once they attain that stage it turns out to be rouge....

Further studies have been done world wide, this is a situation not only limited to India, there have been many case studies conducted on this by many top defense institutions around the globe...

Better than blowing up worshippers in mosques as it happens in the tribal areas all the time.

There stands the difference, Family back ground plays a major role, A soldier is a Human Being, no training can Iron his heart, Its only possible for a few years, but it dosent stay long in a combat zone, there is no proven war strategy which give its troops more than 80% morale to go ahead battling... There altough have been many new DRDO systems brought in to check the stress and nerves before inducting them into the army... It gives a stimulated graph of the persons attributes...

:)))))))))))) i knew you will put forward this leaves issue BUT

1. If that is the reason Indian army men are shooting own officers and colleagues dead in Occupied Kashmir , then your Indian army surely needs some serious training. they lack professionalism.

2. Our army is fighting the most dreaded, advanced, well equipped terrorists and i personally know thousands of our Pakistani army men do not get leaves for too long, as they are deployed in tribal war zones, they are away from families for too long but that has never been a reason for any such incident not a single one.

anyway the issue you mentioned is one of the many reasons and of these many reasons one is the guilt factor among Indian occupying forces in Held Kashmir

The most professional army in the world, the Americans are struggling In Afghanistan with the "Soldier distraught", Agreed they are on a Far away land, but for a combat troop, there is n battle formations or strategies which could keep a soldier battling for more than 4 months 24/7 and Kashmir is a Place where no battles can be survived for long...

The trauma levels differ when on an all out war and Controlling insurgency... Morale levels are in a Controlled position in a War, and it always remains High, But while adopting a stand where its a Precautionary measure to control Insurgency with civilian unrest and a Court martial to be filed upon a person if proven to have killed an innocent, The trauma levels just cannot be measured...

the Indian Army does not operate inside Kashmir, its the paramilitary which does, I have always wondered why the media calls the paramilitary the army...
