AFP: Indian Sikhs defy advice to pray in Pakistan

HASAN ABDAL, Pakistan — Roads were closed, shops shuttered and police on guard in Hasan Abdal, near Pakistan's capital, as about 2,000 Indian Sikh pilgrims defied advice to honour the founder of the faith.
Indian authorities urged the faithful to shun the annual pilgrimage to the neighbouring country, fearing for their safety as deadly attacks by Islamist extremists have soared in Pakistan, killing more than 340 people since October.
Tensions between India and Pakistan, nuclear-armed powers that have fought three wars since independence, have further increased since last year's Mumbai attacks, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistani militants.
But for defiant Sikhs, seeing the sites where their most revered spiritual leader, Guru Nanak, once trod was worth the risk.
"I had a strong will this year to visit holy shrines in Pakistan, despite all the advice and security threats being highlighted in the media," said Manjeet Kor, a 20-year-old woman from the Poonch district of Indian Kashmir.
"If I have to die in a bomb blast in Pakistan, nobody can avert it, so I decided to travel to Pakistan," she said, strolling in the serene courtyard of Hasan Abdal's sacred Gurdwara Panja Sahib shrine.
Sikhs arrived en masse from India this week to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion.
Soaring violence has seen most foreign visitors shun the Muslim nation. But the hardy Sikh pilgrims were not to be deterred, even though numbers were down on an expected 4,100. The authorities estimated 2,100 turned out for the event.
The tour began in Guru Nanak's birthplace, Nankana Sahib, near the eastern city of Lahore, before moving to Hasan Abdal, one of the holiest sites in world Sikhism, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Islamabad.
Guru Nanak is said to have visited Hasan Abdal in 1521, inspiring locals with his spiritual teachings and leaving a hand print in stone.
"Since then, this place is the Mecca of Sikhs. We will come here even if we come here to die," said retired Indian army captain Amar Singh, adjusting a large blue turban and staring in awe at the main shrine.
Pakistan has seen a rise in attacks by the Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked groups since mid-2007, and as the army this year has stepped up operations against the insurgents, retaliatory bomb and suicide attacks have soared.
In the deadliest attack in two years, a car bombing killed 118 people on October 28 in the northwestern city of Peshawar. Islamabad and its twin city of Rawalpindi have also been attacked repeatedly in the past month.
Pakistani police were taking no chances, and Gurdwara Panja Sahib was transformed into a fortress for the pilgrimage which ended Thursday.
Barricades blocked all traffic on the roads around the shrine. Heavily armed police stood by buildings and on streets, while authorities banned the movement of all non-Sikhs around the holy complex.
Devotees -- men in traditional turbans and tunics and women in colourful jewelry -- worshipped in the courtyard, while some took an absolving dip in the water encircling the Gurdwara Punja Sahib complex.
"We have installed 35 security cameras around this complex and deployed 500 security guards to protect this area," said Hasan Akhtar, a senior police official on duty at the site.
"There is no specific threat to this place, but we are confronting security problems as a whole in our country," he told AFP.
Despite the historic roots of Sikhism in modern-day Pakistan, the religion is not widely practiced in the mainly Muslim nation, with only about 30,000 Sikhs in the country, US State Department figures show.
Although they mostly live peacefully side by side with Muslims, Sikhs in parts of the northwest tribal region have been forced to pay protection money to a Taliban-linked Islamist militia.
The community in the Afghan border regions has also reported death threats, while Sikhs say they have been bullied into observing conservative Islamic traditions such as not shaving, while women have been pressured to wear burkas.
"Pakistani Sikhs feel threatened by the Taliban and other extremist forces," said Paramjeet Singh, 35, a pilgrim who works in construction in Indian Punjab.
"The government of Pakistan should provide protection to minorities and their holy places against terrorists."

Why are you posting this on a Pakistani forum?... Sikhs have nothing to do with Pakistan.

Maybe post this in an Indian defence place! Pakistan is a Muslim country, we couldn't care less about Sikhs! Especially since they have the blood of so many innocent Muslims on their hands! While Muslims always promoted peace and if they had to fight, they fought in self-defence.

These Indians shouldn't be allowed in Pakistan! Especially since they are exporting terrorists to our country!

Sikhs have a lot to do with Pakistan because their holy places are here. And Pakistan should care about Sikhs, just like it should for any other human being. Muslims always promoted peace? Just a few days ago a bunch of muslims blew themselves up in a Peshawar market and killed innocent muslims.

Now end your infidel hate speech and calm down.

Coolyo you are a walking joke of a human. No self control, bizarre opinions, and emotional dysfunction. You'v just earned yourself a great respect of being today's mentally ill :taz:.

You don't have an ideology. You just like to stir up as much sh!t as possible. That's exactly the reason we became a iron fist and that's how we stay one. Normal people everywhere will breath a little sigh of relief and continue keeping the world running as you will remain enclosure in your fairytale stories which never existed.

Don't think you can fool me with your false guise of being a Pakistani. You might be a Secular, but you are no humanist.

Also, Wahabi-terrorists have more in common with you secularists than with true Muslims. Both ignore the commands of God, and only follow their egos.

You are delusion. And your Ad-hominem attacks only prove your ignorance!

You Indians are famous in this website for this, no surprise here!

I speak the truth, while ignorant fools like you are left with nothing but hate-filled hearts; full of deception, ignorance, and lies!

PS: I usually I don't waste my precious time with Indian trolls like yourself, but I had a few extra minutes today, hopefully this won't go to your head ;)

To some extent Coolyo reference to '47 events and sikh's acts is valid. But now its a different world. Every year we hospitably welcome Sikh Yatris to Pakistan as state guests. Still in Noshehra and Hasan Abdal many Sikh families are living. They are part of minorities and are playing vital part in the development of our country. Pakistan Army has inducted a Sikh Officer.

We welcome the Sikh people to come to Pakistan and freely visit their holy places. The Government always tries to provide them with fool-proof security.

KIT Over

If you are refering to Mina Bazar incident than I would let you remind that it was not suicide attack. It was planted bomb blast. Still it is to be sort out that who was behind that incident. TTP or someone else.

KIT Out

Sikhs make up 15% of the Indian Army, while consisting of less than 0.5% of the Indian population.

Their loyalties are obvious.

I couldn't care less if 1 or 2 Sikhs became an officer in Pakistan.

Lets talk about the millions of Muslim officers in our Pak sar zameen.

There is no point in giving such notice to a Kaffir. When was the last time you heard of a westerner celebrating a Muslim's entrance into the military or police service.

Family comes first. Muslim brotherhood/sisterhood comes first!

I am not wishing any bad things upon anyone whether they be a Muslim or a Non-Muslim when I am saying this. But I am against hypocracy and things that go against the ideology of Pakistan.

While talking of Pakistani Sikhs we can't compare them with those living in India. The Sikhs living in Pakistan can not betray Pakistan and those in India can not deceive India for the security of their families as you yourself said.

You might not care but we consider it a great step that more and more minority representation is given in our departments so that they prove to be loyal and effective in our country's future. I am at this time speaking of Pakistaniat. They are as much Pakistani as I and you are. The Sikhs of Swat faced much difficulty but they didn't get against Pakistan. I thank them for their sacrifices just like Muslims of Swat did.

You know Rana Bhagwandas was the only Hindu CJ of our supreme court and he took the step of cautioning the media to stop showing programs that can not be viewed by a family together. He strongly ordered the TV channels to ban such programs which are against Islamic ideas. I remember his words that "In an Islamic culture and society such blunt programs can not be allowed." Did any of Muslim CJs do so or the Islamic Ideology Council? No.

If you want to be like west than I have nothing to say to you. We have a common saying that if someone dives in a well to die the other should not follow him.

I agree that our Muslim brotherhood comes first but this brotherhood does not say to kick out every non-Muslim. According to the teachings of our Prophet P.B.U.H. minorities who come under protection of an Islamic country are equal and to some cases have more rights than Muslims. You must research a bit more about this Islamic Ideology of State and you will find out the rights of Non-Muslims in an Islamic State.

Wrong assumption. None of his true fan has even o.ooo1 percent likeness for wahabis as wahabis are the most disrespecting towards the Prohpet(PBUH) hence none of mr Zaid's fans nor he has any closeness or love for wahabis.

You can take me as speaking on his behalf over this statement of yours.

Now come back to the Topic.

It was a joke, not something to take seriously, just like his posts.

3,000 Sikhs not allowed to visit Pakistan

By Our Staff Reporter
Wednesday, 04 Nov, 2009 | 06:48 AM PST LAHORE, Nov 3: Council of Khalistan (USA) Chairman Dr Gurmeet Singh says the Indian government has not allowed some 3,000 Sikhs to travel to Pakistan despite having visa.

At a press conference at the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday,

Gurmeet Singh said some 5,000 Sikhs were to come to Pakistan to take part in festivities in connection with Baba Guru Nanak’s anniversary but about 2,000 managed to come because of restrictions by the Indian government.

Flanked by Manmohan Singh Khalsa, Dr Gurmeet said all the Sikh pilgrims had been provided with full security.

He also praised the Pakistan government and the Evacuee Trust Property Board for facilitating them.
