SRINAGAR: Top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Abu Qasim was reportedly gunned down in Bandipora - 40 kms from here, by security forces in a fierce encounter that lasted most of Wednesday night and early hours of Thursday.
According to media reports quoting a senior police official, a group of terrorists took refuge in the forests in the area after firing at a patrol party on Wednesday afternoon. A soldier of 14 Rashtriya Rifles was injured in the incident and he later succumbed to his wounds.Security forces eventually surrounded the forest and a heavy gun battle ensued even as additional forces were deployed due to decreasing visibility.
Qasim had previously killed the valley's top counter-intelligence police officer - Altaf Ahmad.
