SBB on May 9 awarded the contract for future international NRLA trains to StadlerRail.

After a hotly fought tender process, the Swiss provider won the race to provide 29 EuroCity trains. This order is an important milestone for Stadler Rail, as it takes the company into the high-speed sector at up to 250 km/h. The multi-system trains will be approved for use in Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Austria. The world’s first single-decker low-floor high-speed train complies in full with the terms of the Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against People with Disabilities. The order is worth around CHF 980 million.

Peter Spuhler, owner and CEO of Stadler Rail Group, is extremely pleased, stating, “We are very proud that our proposal fulfilled the strict vehicle specifications in the best way. I would like to take this opportunity to thank SBB for the trust they have placed in us. Of course, our customer references proving our reliability and availability and those relating to the construction and approval of cross-border multi-system trains for Italy, Austria and Germany probably had a positive influence as well.”

Established trains and innovation
The newly developed EC250 is a 200-metre-long articulated train in 11 parts. The carriages are connected by what are known as Jacobs bogies. Stadler Rail was able to use many tried and tested components from existing vehicle types in the development of the train. The company also has vast experience with trains for cross-border traffic between Switzerland and Italy, with some 40 trains providing reliable service for several years. Another 18 multi-system trains have been approved for Italy and Austria. Stadler Rail is well versed in producing trains for Italy. Over 100 Stadler trains are already successfully in use in Italy.

One of Stadler Rail’s main strengths lies in product innovation. In recent years, the Swiss rail vehicle manufacturer has consistently succeeded in developing, building and successfully rolling out new products within very short timescales. For example, there were just three years between order placement and passenger service in late 2011 of the completely newly developed double-decker multiple-unit KISS trains for the Zurich commuter railway system. Stadler Rail has also proven its expertise time and again when it comes to the further development of existing vehicle series, whether it was adapting the FLIRT for the tough weather conditions in Scandinavia or producing the first 200 km/h FLIRT and KISS trains for use in Norway and Austria. All these vehicles achieved excellent availability levels within a short space of time.

Does Train 20 exist?
Not yet, it is slated to arrive in 2020-21. That train is slightly longer with different class of accommodation (Sleeper) than Train 18 which has all seating accommodation.

This is the EMU from Swiss Federal Railways.
Hi there!

IR is working on two similar model trains Train 18 (to be introduced this year) and Train 20 (planned for 2020).
Train 18 is an all seating arrangement while Train 20 is a sleeper class accommodation for long distance (Overnight travel).
What this means in India is that shorter distance (normally 8-10 hours one side journey) Shatabdi expresses will be replaced by Train 18 and Longer distance (12-16 hours and beyond) Rajdhani Expresses will be replaced by Train 20.

Here are the features.

  • One Train 18 coach will cost Rs 2.50 crore.
  • A Train 20 coach will cost around Rs 5.50 crore.
  • These trains would be the fastest in India when introduced.
  • Railways is reportedly planning to roll out two Train 18 by August this year.
  • Train 20 is likely to be rolled out on tracks by 2020.
  • Train 18 will be a fully air-conditioned chair car-type train.
  • Train 20 will be a sleeper-class type train for overnight travel.
  • During trial runs the two trains clocked 176 kmph speed.
  • However, they will run at a maximum speed of 170 kmph when commercial operations start.
  • The trains will be propelled by 6 motor coaches which would help in faster acceleration.
Train 18 features:

  1. On-board infotainment
  2. WiFi on board
  3. Automatic plug doors
  4. Plush luxurious interiors with diffused lighting
  5. Sleek modular toilets
  6. Underslung 3-phase propulsion system
  7. Stainless steel body
  8. GPS-based passenger information system
  9. Sealed gangways
  10. Latest generation bogies for better riding comfort
  11. Zero discharge vaccum-bio toilets
  12. Wide windows
Train 20 features:

How does it compare with Chinese bullet trains?

....yes, or some combination like that. Let us wait and see.
Train 18 will replace shatabdi and like it will have only chair car, no sleepers. So its going to be for only shorter time, at most 10 hours. so mumbai delhi isnt possible. that will be covered by train 20 which will replace rajdhani.

Semi High speed train...Not high speed.

If it's not high speed, then why does it say "high speed" in the name?

How does it compare with Chinese bullet trains?
Óh well no comparison at all.
Chinese Bullet or other HST like TGVs are in altogether different league.
Best i can say is that this is first genuine attempt to increase speed on existing tracks without radical change in infra-structure.
That said new dedicated HST lines are in plan for implementation but it will be atleast 8 more years before Japanese Shinkansen will start plying on limited routes as first true HST in India.

First Made-in-India engineless train gets on track for trial run | Chennai News

CHENNAI: The first train set conceptualised, designed and manufactured completely in India, which looks like a bullet train, will be released for trial in a week’s time.

A train set is a rake which is self-propelled and does not need a locomotive, said Sudhanshu Mani, general manager of Integral Coach Factory (ICF) which has designed and manufactured the train set, known as Train-18, at a cost of Rs 100 crore. A second rake would be ready by March, with costs expected to reduce as more rakes are manufactured.

First Made-in-India engineless train set ready for trial run
Built for a quick intra-day travel on Shatabdi Express routes like Delhi-Bhopal, Chennai-Bengaluru and Mumbai-Ahmedabad, the sixteen-coach train has the latest amenities and can cut down on travel time by 10-15%. The train has better acceleration than conventional trains as it has 50% more power and is equipped with a smart braking system consisting of regenerative and electro-pneumatic braking imported from Hungary.

“This is one of the most ambitious Make in India concepts. By developing it completely in India, we have saved on the cost of technology transfer from a foreign country that is usually the norm,” Mani said. An imported rake of similar characteristics would have cost Rs 170 crore, he said. Established private companies in India would have taken 36 months to deliver a similar product, he added.

Two executive class coaches in the centre of the train have seats which can rotate by 360 degrees, giving passengers the option of enjoying a straight-on view of the scenery. These seats have been air-lifted from Spain; apart from the braking system and transformers, these are the only imported components, say officials.

For the first time, passengers would be able to knock on the doors of the driver and also have a look at the panel, as the train has a continuous profile.

The train’s speed test would be conducted on the Moradabad-Bareilly and Kota-Sawai Madhopur stretch next month, said officials.
