Actually its not too Sci-Fi ... The Particle acceleration and bombardment is thing of the future and still a dream...EM waves are a practicality... Inciting a target with heat/energy need a high density burst of Em energy and uses a LOT of power. Using it to heat up ballistic projectiles requires persistent incitations on the target surface.. But im quite sure it would be cheaper than making a supersonic SAM..

A better method can be a channeled EMP but ,i dont know if it can be channeled in a desired vector yet.
