There is a university across the bay at Philadelphia known as USP (University of the Sciences of Philadelphia) -- i've a friend who's finishing her Pharm.D (Doctorate of Pharmacy) over there and she joked around due to the overwhelming number of South Asian American students, USP is also known as "University of Shahs and Patels"

Its true tho, South Asians are well represented in the Medical Profession here in the US; either it be Nursing, Pharmacy, Medicine, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, etc...

Some people are falsely attributing the light skin-desire to European invasions which is not really true. If you look at ancient paintings, you will notice that individuals who are supposed to be beautiful are drawn in light colour and the evil is drawn in dark. When I say light, I didn't mean white colour but it's the gold/yellow skin colour that's still the standard of beauty not white. At least that's the case in Sri Lanka.

Well, I made my post based on my experience in Sri Lanka so I assumed it must be the same for other regions in South Asia.

These are Sri Lankan paintings:

Lighter ones are nobles and darker ones are peasants:

Notice how Buddha is drawn in gold/yellow colour while the evil is drawn in dark colour.

The last one is the most oldest, from Sigyria.

And more relevant, because it's closest to 'ancient'.

It's true, you're right they give a golden color, even a green example is shown, which isnt normal from other examples from the Subcontinent.

I have been to Sigiriya and almost every one of those women was drawn in yellow colour and it's a common historical notion in Sri Lanka where it says the nobles are lighter and the peasants are darker. Are you trying to deny it?There is even a legend/story in mahavamsa that says a prince was taken from the castle and hidden in a rural village to protect him from being killed by his uncles and the uncles in return raided the village and killed every yellow/gold coloured boy they could find.In fact, not just in Sri Lanka, this can be seen in many other countries too because it's the peasants who work under the sun so they are more likely to be darker.

I dont care about 5 to 7 figures from Sri Lanka. Go to Ajanta with like 16 artificial caves filled with paintings from 2nd Century BC to 5th Century AD.

Same in East Asia.

Historically, the poorer people had to work outside in the fields for longer, thus ending up with a more tanned complexion.

Nowadays it is a bit reversed. People who are wealthy can afford to take more vacations so they end up being more tanned.

In Hong Kong I notice a lot of people seek to become more tanned, for example. As if to show that they are wealthy enough to take regular overseas vacations.

It doesn't have anything to do with white washing. I said, the ancient nobles were drawn in lighter colour but there are instances where some kings were drawn in darker colour too. And again it doesn't have anything to do with foreigners either because if that was the case then "white" would be the standard of beauty but in Sri Lanka it's yellow/gold. As @Chinese-Dragon said, the nobles didn't spend much time under the sun and enjoyed a comfortable life so it doesn't take an einstein to realise that they were lighter than the rest of the population. And why are you making a big deal out of it? I just mentioned the situation in Sri Lanka so relax.

They're from Ajanta. There are two phases.

2nd-1st Century BC

3rd-5th Century AD


Phase 1 - 2nd-1st Century BC, most damaged, destroyed, repainted on.
Phase 2 - 3rd-5th Century AD, most of the paintings are from this phase.

Face Wash is an alternative to Soap and most men these days use it.Face wash doesn't regulate the amount of Melanin in your skin.
