Indian origin scientist tells why aliens can’t contact us

Sydney: If the search for an alien life has not yielded any conclusive results in the last 50 years, it is probably because life on other planets was brief and has gone extinct soon after its origin owing to runaway heating or cooling on their planets, say astrobiologists led by an Indian origin scientist.

“The universe is probably filled with habitable planets, so many scientists think it should be teeming with aliens,” said Aditya Chopra from Australian National University (ANU).

“Early life is fragile so we believe it rarely evolves quickly enough to survive,” he added in a paper published in the journal Astrobiology.

“Most early planetary environments are unstable. To produce a habitable planet, life forms need to regulate greenhouse gases such as water and carbon dioxide to keep surface temperatures stable,” Dr Chopra added.

About four billion years ago the Earth, Venus and Mars may have all been habitable. However, a billion years or so after formation, Venus turned into a hothouse and Mars froze into an icebox.

“Early microbial life on Venus and Mars, if there was any, failed to stabilise the rapidly changing environment,” said co-author associate professor Charley Lineweaver.

“Life on Earth probably played a leading role in stabilising the planet’s climate,” he noted.

According to Dr Chopra, their theory has solved a puzzle.

“The mystery of why we haven’t yet found signs of aliens may have less to do with the likelihood of the origin of life or intelligence and have more to do with the rarity of the rapid emergence of biological regulation of feedback cycles on planetary surfaces,” he explained.

Wet and rocky planets, with the ingredients and energy sources required for life seem to, be ubiquitous. However, as physicist Enrico Fermi pointed out in 1950, no signs of surviving extra-terrestrial life have been found.

A solution to Fermi’s paradox, say the researchers, is near universal early extinction which they have named the “Gaian Bottleneck”.

“One intriguing prediction of the ‘Gaian Bottleneck’ model is that the vast majority of fossils in the universe will be from extinct microbial life, not from multicellular species such as dinosaurs or humanoids that take billions of years to evolve,” Lineweaver pointed out.

And what he will say about Kapler project discovery of at least 2 earth like planets???

Discovery of earth like planets does not guarantee presence of intelligent spiece, thats what the article says.

What scientists say is if water is there then at least amoeba type will exist.

If Universe is so big with so many galaxies and similar earth planets then we are not only planet with life.

I think you missed the word 'intelligent'.

One plausible explanation was a metallic asteroid was moving near the earth at that particular time, which reflected other earth based radio waves back to earth, hence unexpected increase in the intensity for a very short frame of time.

That actually makes more sense.

There are very few planets that are capable of sustaining intelligent humanoids.

There is only 3 possibilities :
1. An ET form of life in primitive stage of life like single-celled creatures , has no capability or knowledge to make a contact therefore humans interested only for studding it ...not possible right now.
2. An ET form of life in same level of technology as we are , just good to call them on the telephone nothing else ..
3. An ET form of life galaxy away in terms of technology in comparison by us ... it's horribly terrifying ... they might look at us as guinea pigs in a way we look at ants .... we know nothing about them ...
So please be quiet and mind your own business ...

We can't understand something we can not imagine , aliens with alien technology is forever a. schrodinger cat

Just because we are not able to harvest anything from constantly analyzing deep space and possible planets in other galaxy does not mean that any planet cannot sustain life. Due to immensely faster expanding universe which is billions of miles per second is restricting us to analyze planets which are millions and trillions of light years away from us. Perhaps, we should not rely only just one theory. Black holes do exist is substantiated almost after a millennium after it was mentioned by Einstien...

space is so vast....... if a habitable planet was within 100 light years of our sol system. it would take 100 years for for their radio signals to reach us and 100 years for them receive our return message, but this is also assuming both of our civilizations are active at the same time.

point being it's just very unlikely any two advance alien species to be living in the same era and then even if they are the distances are just too vast to communicate and visit one another.
Radio waves will take even much more than that. radio waves dont travel as fast as light.

If we keep religion and science together we find that life in other worlds do exist. One example is Buraq a flying living being of donkey size. Its speed is mentioned as one step where our eyesight ends. Where did it come from and where did it go was a mystery.

I always think earth is like a nest, when we learn to fly we'll leave it and find new worlds. Its all about flying and speed.

How to contact aliens depends on the means of communication. Signals of even our one gadget don't match with the other. How can we contact with the aliens. We will've to find a common universal mean of communication. LIGHT is the only thing that has that quality whether aliens are machines or bio-machines.

Here humans don't treat others humans with respect (forget other animals with whom we share our DNA), and we expect aliens to show interest. Funny.
