Indian-origin Democrat endorsed by Obama

Indian-American Democratic politician Kamala Devi Harris has won the endorsement from Barack Obama, making her the first among the half-a-dozen Indian-origin politicians contesting the November 2 mid-term elections to get the support from the US President.

45-year-old Harris, who is contesting for the Attorney General of California, has done a remarkable job, said Obama.

However, at a time when Obama's popularity rating is at low ebb, the impact of his endorsement would be known only after the results of the November 2 elections.

In an email distributed by the Democratic National Committee/Organising for America on Saturday, Obama said Kamala Harris has always been a strong voice for Californians.

Obama credited Harris with several achievements including launching an early intervention programs to reduce the cycle of repeat offenders.

"As San Francisco District Attorney, she launched early intervention programs to reduce the cycle of repeat offenders. She created her office's first Child Sexual Assault Unit and first Environmental Justice Unit. She prioritised the prosecution of financial predators, processing over 450 consumer complaints in 2009 and forming the state's first stand-alone Mortgage and Investment Fraud Unit," Obama said.

"Now she's running to be California's attorney general, and I am proud to stand by her. She is someone who understands the needs of all Americans, and I need allies like that fighting for change across the country...," he said.

"Kamala has done a remarkable job in San Francisco. Now it's time to send her to Sacramento so she can get those same results for all Californians -- but she needs our help if she's going to win this race," Obama said in his endorsement message.

Harris is running against Steve Cooley -- a Republican candidate who currently serves as district attorney for Los Angeles County.

I hate all Indians who go to USA to work.
Some fools even become politicians ! Why, can't they become politicians in India and help the country ?

Well, I imagine most of these Indians are born and bred in the US, so that's where their allegiance lies.

However, I also think it's good for India and will help India. They'll look to ensure a pro-Indian policy outlook for whichever US govt is in power.

So don't think it's bad news, if anything for you, it's good news.

You can't expect someone like Kamala Devi Harris to navigate the Indian political landscape (which is unique and different) and be successful. If anything, she'll flop as it's not her own backyard.

She's of better use in her capacity fighting for India from afar. Just look at Jews in US politics and the help they've been able to provide Israel for a comparison.

Politics is a different ball game in India and the US......

There really is no comparison...

India is a country with a population of 1.18billion people so that means there remains enough talent and brain power to run the show for the country even if a limited few take the hike the west ways, though what one certainly wants is that the brightest of the lot is retained by the country since such people are irreplaceable generally.

NRIs and POIs play a huge part in exerting our influence globally. The American Indian community’s role was crucial in the way the indo-US civil nuke deal was pushed in the American congress which goes on to show that if migrants are successful in their adopted countries then they sure have an influence on the way the policies of a nation get framed and that is something one back home sitting in india wants as the country grows in economic scale and political influence globally. If the Indians are not going to fill the void someone else will and then they will win the war of influence that we so desperately want to gain.

Don’t forget each year the same people send back remittance which last fiscal was to the tune of US $54 billion which helps the economic situation immensely, one of the direct impacts of which is the rate of investment of a country to gdp which is closer to 5% points since this money makes way to the banking system of the country.

There is always the added advantage of reverse brain drain, the only thing that needs to be done is lucrative opportunities get created that these very same people who left the country actually find a good enough reason to head back home and contribute directly to the growth of the nation which is sure to add value. The manmohan singh’s, the montek singh’s, the chidambram’s are all the products of such a reverse brain drain who have helped the country in their little ways.

There are the laxmi mittal’s who after making their billions come back home and invest back home in form of fdi which helps the country in productivity, generate employment many-many times more than they could have otherwise by sitting in the country, though not to say they cant replicate the same in india but then opportunity can come knocking anywhere so why just sit for it at home when the globe has doors open for you.

This world got the kalpana chawla’s and that did not happen by sitting in india. Sure it will happen even from india as well but will take time.

This is a globalized world where much like the flow of fdi there is also the flow of talent and if the best talent is to be retained then best opportunities need to be provided right here in india the responsibility of doing that rests with us Indians who reside in the country. India being a democratic country should not dictate its will on where people should lead their lives, it needs to be an independent decision just the way it has been so far.

That is right; It is like comparing a thief with a robber baron.

Its definitely dirtier....

Though American politicans work through a legalized form of corruption in the form of "campaign funds" as opposed to Indian Politicians using old school "under the table" practicies.....
