@arp2041....Draw is very crucial for success of our boxing team. One concern for our boxing team is that most of the boxers will be unseeded in Olympic as they are new faces. Chance is that they have to face 'would be medalists' very early. As an example Shiva Thapa despite being very talented and chosen over veteran Akhil Kumar may have to face Alvarez Estrada or Luke Cambell in earlier rounds. Estrada is the 2011 World Champion and most feared boxer in this category. Shiva met him only once and scored tied on 16:16. Estrada was declared winner in recounting. I have seen videos of top boxers in his category. He can take on guys like Campbell easily. Just pray that he doesnt have to face Estrada before final.

That's even better, this means that most of the top boxers haven't seen much of our new faces on the other hand our new boxers will be having a complete knowledge of the top boxers since they have seen them many times. Our young boxers will be a surprise package for the top notch, our boxers have nothing to lose but only to gain, they are not afraid of anyone, they know that they have to enter semifinals of each category to atleast secure a bronze. All Indian eyes will be on 7men + 1 woman boxing team of India.

Boxing videos are available online. And videos of 2-3 recent matches are enough for a seasoned boxer and his team to formulate strategies. But, you are right, the new guys like Devendro , Shiva are fearless and they dont bother about who is the opponent. See the video ...Devendro fighting against South Korean boxer (World Ranking 2)...though he lost, you have to appreciate him. The Koreann escaped because of his experience. May be next time it wont be so easy. These kids are maturing every day.

^^^ It will be very hard for India to get a medal in hockey, under 6 ranking seems realistic though.

True...even Mr Nobbs is not aiming more than top 6 finish. But there are three very strong teams in our group- The Netherlands, Germany and New Zealand.
India's performance in recent practice matches- :(
India 3-3 Spain
India 1-2 Spain
India 6-5 South Africa
India 3-4 South Africa
India 1-3 Great Britain

Next match is on wednesday against Spain.

However , we need to be thankful to Mr Nobbs and the physio of the team to arrest the decline of Indian Hockey. Till now Nobbs's sole concentration is the national team. he said that after Olympic he will work to find young talents and groom them. If things go accordingly , we will expect more on 2016 :) .

Vijendra Singh must be a very happy person seeing his nemesis Emilio Correa is not available this time. Correa defeated him not only in the Olympic 2008 semifinal but in the first round of the World Championship 2011. Bijendra seemed to have developed a mental blockade against him.

If Mary kom is seeded, she might have to win just one match to ensure a medal as there are only 12 girls qualified. It is unlikely that she will face Ren Cancan or Nicola Adams - two hot favourites for Gold other than Mary. Mary has beaten Ren by 14-8 (impressive!) in the final of Asian Championship.

Young Laishram Devendro Singh reached QF of the World Championship last year. I am not sure whether they will count that to give the seeding. I just dont want to see him against the Chinese and the Korean boxers before semifinal. These guys (Ranked 1 and 2 respectively) are very experienced and technically very strong. SImilarly Shiva Thapa should not face Alvarez Estrada very early. He is the most feared boxer in 56 kg. However Estrada vs Thapa bout ended in 16:16 and the Cuban won on recount. I felt Luke Campbell , another favourite in this category not so impressive. It is to remember Devendro had replaced Amandeep Singh and Nanao Singh (both with impressive records); while Shiva given opportunity over Akhil Kumar (reached QF in 2008 and missed the medal by a whisker; won gold in 2006 CWG). It testiies the quality of our young guns.

Vikash Kishan has fair chance to win atleast a Bronze medal. His fighting is surely not as attactive as it is the case for Devendro or Shiva. But, he has the best defence among Indian boxers and he knows it is just scoring points that matters. Same is true for Bijendra. However, I think it is going to be difficult for Monoj Kumar or Jai Bhagwan while young Sumit Sangwan can causes some upset.

My prediction about boxing- atleast 3 medals.

Abhinav Bindra, archers and lifters enter Olympic Village

Beijing Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra was the first Indian shooter to enter the London Olympic Games Village along with the 10-member archery squad and a four-member weightlifting squad.

The archers and the lifters entered the Games Village first while Bindra joined them a little later, on Monday evening.

"They have settled down and are looking forward to carry out their workouts at the training venues," Brigadier P K Muralidharan Raja, Deputy Chef de Mission of the Indian Contingent, said.

The sprawling Games Village consists of 2,818 townhouses and apartments which can accommodate 15,000 residents.

The Indian contingent of 81 athletes and 51 officials have been provided accommodation in the Seaside Building S1, named as Titan.

The organisers have arranged for volunteers for each contingent. The Indian Contingent has got seven volunteers, who are all Indian by origin but working in UK.

The official welcome ceremony for the Indian Contingent is scheduled to be held at Games Village on Sunday.

The Indian delegation had requested the organisers to consider a change of date to July 22 but the ceremony could not be re-scheduled as no time slot was available.

Suddenly penulty corner has become a matter of concern for our Hockey team. Despite having one of the best drag flickers Sandeep Singh in the team, we have converted only 2 from 22 PCs in the practice matches in Europe. In last match against Great Britain our boys missed 6 PCs. Unbelievable ! What is going on- Sandeep and Raghunath are really struggling or Mr Nobbs doesnt want to reveal his PC strategies just before Olympic. Hope the later to be true.

There is another guy who is not getting much attention- Om Prakash Karhana (Shot Put) His personal best 20.69 is not far from the medalists in Olympics. He is doning (as he claimed) 21 m in training. If he cana achieve that in Olympic final round , one more medal will come.

Indian archers plan to do a Ganguly at Lord's

India's male archers plan to do an action replay of Sourav Ganguly's torso-baring celebrations if they manage to notch up an Olympic medal at cricket's Mecca -- the hallowed turf of Lord's.

Veteran archer Tarundeep Rai is all excited about taking aim at the historic cricket venue which will host the archery competition during the Olympics.

"At this moment, we are not looking too far. I don't know what would it be like. But surely, we would celebrate like Ganguly (by baring torso and swirling the jersey) had done (in 2002)," Rai said.

Aiming a fourth straight Olympic title, the South Korean men archers maybe supremely confident but against the Indians, the world champions would surely find themselves jittery, felt Rai.

Fresh from grabbing the quota places in the final Olympic qualification meet at the World Cup Stage III in Ogden this month, the resurgent Indians are yet to lose against the mighty Koreans, with a two out of two win record in one year.

From being number one till the World Cup 2011 Stage One in May when they beat Korea in the semifinals before losing to the US to settle for a silver, India slipped to number six.

In fact, when their women counterparts qualified for the Olympics from World Championships, the men's team went on a losing spree and the critics wrote them off.

As fate would have it, the Indians lifted the giant monkey off their back when they stunned the Koreans in World Cup 2012 Stage II in May this year to return to winning ways. They later clinched the Olympic berth on the sidelines of Stage III this month.

"It was like a life-coming-a-full-circle moment. 2011 was like a punishment. People were only talking about us whenever we went out. It was humiliating," Rai, who would compete in his second Olympics, said.

"But the comeback was inspiring, especially when we beat Koreans to return to winning ways. This will give us an definite edge at the Olympics. The journey has just begun now. We feel we are in the midst of our best performance that should translate in an Olympic medal," Rai added.

"We should not be thinking too much about winning a medal. After all, the competitors are the same. Throughout the year, we are competing against the same archers. So it's no different. It's just the atmosphere that makes Olympics big."

"Our collective aim is to maintain our good score, something that should place us among the top four in the elimination round."

The top-four teams will get byes into round two of last eight teams. But being the senior-most in the squad does not mean he would have an added responsibility.

"We are preparing ourselves like a close-knit unit. The build-up to the Games has been more of team strategy. We are trying to spend time together to understand ourselves better.

"If somebody has a bad day, the other two of us should be able to compensate it. That's quite critical in a competition like the Olympics," he said.

Rai also credited the Olympic Gold Quest that helped the men's team by giving them South Korean coach Lim Chae Woong and a mental trainer in Vaibhav Agashe.

"Such was the lack of form, I was not confident to be back in the side from the trials. The fresh involvement with him (Woong) was helpful. He was quick to assess us and rectify our mistakes.

"As Jayanta (Talukdar) had already qualified (for the Olympics), the pressure was more on Rahul and I. The March selection trial was very crucial. We trained with him for two months which was helpful."

Their next stop was World Cup 2012 Stage 1 where they scored a confidence-boosting 221 in their round one win over the Mexicans before going down to eventual winners USA.

"Finally, we tasted success in Stage II with yet another cherished win over Koreans. It set the tempo," he said.

Shooting 2-5
Archery 2-4
Hockey 0-1
Boxing 2-5
Discus Throw 0-2
Badminton 1-2
Tennis 0-0
Weightlifting 0-2
Total 7-21

well my prediction is as follows:

Shooting - 2
Archery - 2
Boxing - 2
Badminton - 1
Wrestling -1
------------------------
Total - 8 (for sure)

If luck favors India than:

Discuss throw - 1
Tennis - 1
Hockey - 1 (extremely unlikely)
Weightlifting - 1(extremely unlikely)
+ 1 more medal in each Shooting, Badminton, Boxing = 3

So worst case scenario will be 8 medals & best case will be 15/16 (this should place India at least in under 35 rank, India ranked 50 in Beijing).
