I really hope they do their best and improve india's ranking. But sports ministry shud adopt a 10/15year planning to nourish young talents so that v can come up among top three nations in olympic. i think v have a very good example like china.unfortunately our obsession with cricket is putting other games behind.:) Visionless ministry brings disgrace to india.

Its totally your wish mate, but just tell me how will India can dream of Olympic medals unless Indian people doesn't support that dream? Pls, don't make govt. scape goat for every wrong we have, ultimately govt. of a country is the reflection of wishes of the people. Why govt. in India do everything for cricket, b'coz people want it to do. Why was Sachin made RS MP & not Abhinav Bindra? So until & unless we support our team there will be no improvement in our performance, i m not saying that we can be no. 1 if we support the olympic cause but if we start from now in 20 years time India can be no. 1, we have to make a start. Doesn't you feel ashamed that in a country of 1.2 billion we are getting just 2-3 medals in biggest sporting event of the world?

The problem is deeply rooted.Every indian must go through one or two year military training in my opinion. That will enhance our fitness and attitude. our average middle class parents dream to become just a doctor or engineer is not helping our nation's dream to move forward.

When I was a kid, our school organized an Indian movie shown inside my school used as a moral lecture. The movie is about Pilavullakandi Thekkevarambil Usha, so I used to have this impression that India was pretty strong in track and field, what happened since then?

Someone gave the blacks shoes.

We are well prepared for London Games: Mary Kom, Rajput

India`s lone woman boxing hope M C Mary Kom and shooters Sanjeev Rajput and Vijay Kumar are upbeat and pleased with their preparations for the upcoming London Olympic Games.

"I would try my best to win a medal at the Olympics," said five-time world champion Mary Kom who is supported by a non-profit organisation Olympic Gold Quest in her preparations for the Games where women`s boxing is making its debut.

Rifle shooter Rajput and pistol marksman Kumar insisted there would be no extra pressure on the shooting squad following the feats of Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Abhinav Bindra in securing silver and gold in the last two Games respectively.

"We are going to face the same competitors against whom we have competed against in the World Cup, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. There is no extra pressure on us," said 31-year-old Navy shooter Rajput who finished a distant 26th in the 50m 3-position and prone events at Beijing four years ago.

He also gave credit to OGQ, founded by sports legends Prakash Padukone and Geet Sethi, for supporting him from 2010.

"Our preparations are going fine," he added.
Kumar said his event, 25m rapid fire pistol, needed a very good hand-eye co-ordination for which he has been practising yoga and doing a lot of exercises.

Both the shooters are set to go to Hanovar, Germany ahead of the Games, Rajput for an extended training session (July 5-17) and Kumar to take part in a test event where all the top shooters are to take part from July 5-25.

Rajput is scheduled to reach London ten days ahead of the Games, commencing on July 27, while Kumar is set to reach the Olympic city a day or two prior to the Opening.

"My event is on August 6, 7 and 8," said Kumar.
Both had trouble adjusting to the cold conditions prevalent in March when they took part in competitions earlier this year there and said they expected warmer conditions during the Games.
Badminton legend Padukone had a word of advice for the three sportspersons who were honoured at the Bombay Gymkhana and said they should not put additional pressure on themselves by focusing on winning a medal in the Games.

"We are here to celebrate 50 days to the Olympics. They
have really worked hard over the last two years and we, at the OGQ, have supported them. My advice to them would be not to go there with the mindset of winning a medal but to take each match at a time. This way they will achieve the result," said the former All England champion.

Ace cueist Sethi said that the Indian sporting graph in the Olympic Games has seen a steady rise over the last few editions - particularly since tennis champion Leander Paes broke the jinx of winning an individual medal after more than four decades, at the Atlanta Games in 1996.

"Leander Paes started it in 1996 by winning an individual bronze medal. It was continued by Karnam Malleswari in Sydney in 2000 and then we had Rathore winning the first individual silver in 2004 at Athens followed by Bindra`s gold in Beijing where we won two other bronze medals," he pointed out.

"We are all hoping the country would win more medals than we secured in 2008. The government has shown intent and the money has started to trickle to the athletes over the last seven years or so. We, at the OGQ, are only complementing the government and the sports ministry," said the former world billiards champion.

OGQ`s CEO and former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha said that the 14 sportspersons supported by the foundation, including the trio present today, are now bound for London.

Former national table tennis champion and an OGQ director, Niraj Bajaj, was also present to lend his support to the trio who were handed over encouraging placards put together by school children during the function.

Nothing is gonna happen until Indian nation as a whole changes its attitude towards sports. Most parents discourage their kids from taking part in sports and most of the sportsperson are only in the game for a govt job.

I don't think our Hockey team will be a medal hope. Also though all the players you listed are really in contingent but i don't know somehow they fail to deliver at the very last stage. Hope they deliver this time.
