Rio de Janeiro: Faced with the gigantic expectations of an excited nation, India's trail-blazing gymnast Dipa Karmakar has been put under "house arrest" at the Olympic Games Village by her coach Bishweshwar Nandi as she gears up to script history in the vault finals on August 14.

More than 35,000 kilometers away from her hometown Agartala in Tripura, Dipa is set to turn 23 tomorrow but is unlikely to receive birthday greetings except for the ones from her parents.

Her only companions are roommate Saikhom Mirabai Chanu -- the only Indian woman weightlifter -- and of course Nandi who's been with her for the last 16 years.

"I've removed the SIM card from her mobile. Only parents are allowed to talk to her. I don't want her to lose focus," Nandi told PTI from the Games Village, a day after Dipa became the toast of the nation by making the final of artistic gymnastics' vault finals.

"Her birthday celebration can wait for the moment. It's only her parents who are allowed to talk to her at the moment during the small breaks I give her."

"But she does not miss it. She likes to stay aloof from friends, her friends circle is very small, thanks to her tough regimen in gymnastics," Nandi said of Dipa who trains in SAI New Delhi.

Dipa had become the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics.

She has also caught attention for performing the risky Produnova vault -- a double-front somersault which has the highest degree of difficultly for a women's vault.

"Every event in gymnastics is a risk, accident may happen anytime but Dipa has mastered the Produnova and we're very hopeful," Nandi said.

Dipa and her coach follow a strict regimen with training sessions of four hours each in the morning and evening sessions.

Nandi is grateful to the Government of India and Sports Authority of India for their help.

"We got three months time but I'm grateful to SAI director (Injeti Srinivas) and project officer (Inderjeet Singh Pabla) who went all out to help us."

Daughter of a weightlifting coach in Agartala, Dipa, youngest of two sisters, started gymnastics at the age of three under Nandi's wife Suma, a SAI coach.

"She brought Dipa to me and we have never looked back since then," Nandi said recollecting her formative years at the Netaji Subhas Regional Coaching Centre in Agartala.

Nandi said Dipa won't disappoint in the final slated to be held at 2.47pm local time on August 14.

"By the time she will finish, it will be August 15 in India -- a time difference of 8 hours and 30 minutes -- and a medal in gymnastics can be the greatest Independence Day gift to the nation. We can have her birthday celebration then," Nandi concluded.

The coverage of this Olympics is disappointing. Is DD National covering Indian events.

India needs a sport city where every facilities available.. Every child from all corners of the country should get an opportunity to showcase it's talent in particular field of sports.. Free education along with world class training should attract many talents.. With thousands of talents training from early age situation will improve.. Central govt should take initiative in this regard ..Initial investment and ten years of proper maintenance the system should be able to sustain itself..

Also we should send only those people who come within 10% of Olympic bronze medal position.

Yesterday I was watching the swimming heat. The Indian girl swam with a time of 2:05:43 while in oothe heats the time was easily 1:54:32 You cant expect to reach the finals with such bad performance.

No need to send 120 strong contingent. Send only 50 people but send those who atleast reach the semifinals if not the finals

And what guarantee that these 50 people will get medals? Also, u need to understand one have to qualify for the Olympics themselves before even one can complete. (Case and point Mary Kom or even the indian Hockey Team)

I'm proud that they have reached the Olympic stage and yes bit disappointed and hope they can do better!

I am NOT saying that these 120 atheletes did not qualify for the olympics. Hell i am proud of all of them

I am also NOT saying that the 50 will definitely get the medals

What I am saying is that we should send the best among all those who qualify so that the medal chances improve

They ARE the best who qualified! , one can't send someone else in place of those who qualified especially in individual events (teams events are different eg: hockey)

Also Each event have its own set of rules when it comes to olympics!

There are fairly strict regulations for qualifying/taking part in the olympics. Some get in as part of a wild card entry to be given a taste of the top level and encourage them, it's not like any random person gets in.

I know that all 120 of these have qualified after taking part in various competitions across the world. they have made the country proud

What I am saying is suppose for a swimming event the qualification mark is 2 min 5 second. The swimmer who does in 2:04:50 will qualify based on the criteria. However if in the last olympics the Bronze medal was at 2:00:00 then is there a realistic chance for her to even qualify for the semifinal let alone the finals.

What I was saying is if last olympic bronze is at 2 minutes let us send only those who atleast have time of 2 min 2 sec

I understand fully that we have to train our atheletes well, we have to spend money on them they must have international exposure. I am NOT at all denying any of these things. But olympics is not the only international tournamnts. there are Asian games, Commonwealth games etc etc

We can also start international leagues of our own like the Hockey India League and invite international sportspersons

All these things have to be done. No denying any of these. but when you are sending someone to the biggest stage dont send those who dont have any chance

It is like you have taught someone the basics of swimming and then suddenly throw them into the deep end

Sorry I am in a bad mood seeing the performances of the athletes who are failing at the last seconds

I am proud of each and every of them but dil ka armaan hai medal tally main hone ka

"but when you are sending someone to the biggest stage dont send those who dont have any chance"
Who decided this??

I think you are not understanding abt how do one qualifies for the Olympics. Each sport has different rules and entry. Not All the same. That is where other games and athletics tournaments come in. Our athletes do compete in them and have secured a place in the Olympics

Case and point : Dipa Karmakar . Don't tell me that only one woman gymnast we are able to send!. Im sure there are many BUT like i mentioned she competed in different games and tournaments to gain points and ranking which are then used to secure a place!
