Islamabad—Raising concerns over India’s recent test of nuclear capable ballistic missile K-4 from nuclear submarine Arihant, Pakistan Foreign Office saying this is a serious development which will impact the delicate strategic balance in the region.
The reported latest launch of ballistic missile and development of a nuclear submarine fleet by India is a serious development which impact the delicate strategic balance in the region, Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria told the media persons at his weekly news briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, adding it has resulted in nuclearization of Indian Ocean, which should be a matter of worrisome for the region and the international community.
India conducted the test from Arihant in the Bay of Bengal. The missile was fired from around 20 metres under water, and covered a distance of 700 km before hitting the target. Arihant, the lead ship of India’s Arihant-class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, has been designed based on the Russian Akula-1 class submarines.
The spokesperson said the Indian side did not notify Pakistan about the submarine launch ballistic missile. He pointed out that any test can be mistaken by other country as an offensive missile. We therefore, believe Pakistan should be informed about the test of ballistic missiles inline the pre notification agreement.
When his attention was drawn to the recent reports emerging about the security of Indian security arsenals, Nafees Zakaria said all countries should take the requisite steps for the security of nuclear weapons. He said Pakistan on its part has taken legal, administrative and regularity measures for the security of these arsenals that are at par with the international standards.
To a question about talks with India, the spokesperson said Pakistan is ready to hold talks with New Delhi to resolve all outstanding issues as and when the Indian side is ready. Pakistan and India are two neighbors which must live in peace and harmony, he added.
When asked about the interference of foreign agents in Pakistan, Nafees Zakaria said Pakistan has repeatedly highlighted the foreign agents involved in subversive activities in the country. The arrest of Kulbushan Yadav has also vindicated Pakistan’s point of view in this regard. He said based on the confession of the agent, other arrests have also been made. He said Pakistan has briefed a number of countries about the sabotage activities of these foreign agents and will continue to raise this issue at every forum.
The spokesperson also raised concerns over increasing human rights violations in the Indian held Kashmir and said Pakistan has always raised the plight of their Kashmiri brethren at international forums.
To a question, the Spokesperson said the Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah was scheduled to visit Pakistan on the second and third of May but the visit has been postponed. New dates will be worked out through diplomatic channels.
Zakaria said the process of Quadrilateral Coordination Group is still on and there is desire to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan. When asked about the Afghan side posing accusatory finger to Pakistan after every terrorist incident, the spokesperson said Pakistan strongly believes in Afghan led and Afghan owned peace process and has condemned the recent terror acts on Afghan territory. Pakistan itself is engaged in fighting terrorism , he said .
