What's new

Indian Navy's TU-142ME has max range of 12,000 KM

Is it possible to convert these beasts to long range bombers once the ASW role is taken care of by p-8Is..?It would be an awesome platform to carry lots of Nirbhays and LR-CMs.

Yes, infact they can carry cruise missiles with very minimal structural modifications.

The Bear is a long ranged beast..
And is able to carry a fairly large load.
However, the Bear-F that India uses is specifically for Maritime purposes.. and if given the right radar.. is an excellent ASW platform.. within ..weapons such as the Brahmos.. can be carried a plenty.
More suited to be relocated to the east.

just land in goa at the airport . you can see them in the flesh .
if you have time go see the naval museum behind the airbase . it has a harrier . depth charges ,Sonobuoy , torpedoes too:)

That's news to me!
These are have ARK on the Tail so they are stationed in Arakonam.
They might be in Goa for a short time(Training with the western fleet?)

Might be coincidental or that the Bears have been shifted to Dabolim.

The main base for the Bears still remains Arakkonam. But they are regularly detached individually to Dabolim for operational sorties across the Arabian Sea right upto the Straits of Bab-el-Mandeb and the Straits of Hormuz. While sorties into the Southern Indian Ocean and to the East originate from Arakkonam.

@Oscar,
You are quite correct, the Bears are primarily in LRMR roles while the Il-38s were configured for ASW. Now with the P-8Is coming in they will take over the ASW mantle progressively. The Bears also acted in LRCOMM roles with the Nuclear Subs. I don't see the the IN Bears in a primary ASW role, hunters yes but not as killers.

Im thinking of converting Tu-142ME into a cruise missile carrier with 1200-km Nirbhay ALCMs
or air-launched BrahMos-II hypersonic missile.

Something like the B-52 that carries the X-51A or the H-6 that carries CJ-10.

I was thinking same.

According to sources, TU 142 can carry 6 Brahmos missiles

I think TU 142 ME of IN can carry up to 8 Nirbhay ALCMs.

Also Brahmos II will be heavier so its ALCM version will carried by TU 142 ME only not Flanker, if Brahmos II weighs 3 or more than 3 tons
