Indian Navy's P-81 aircraft to be armed with new US radars

Indian Navy's new long range maritime reconnaissance aircraft P-81 will come armed with new generation American AN/APY-10 radars, giving it the capability to provide ultra-high resolutions of targets over seas and land. The new radars made by US defence and aerospace major Raytheon are being installed on the P-81 aircraft, the first of which the Indian Navy will receive by 2012.

Raytheon has bagged a contract from Boeing for developing these new long-range, multi-mission radars for the sophisticated P-81 surveillance aircraft, the company has said.

"The maritime and overland surveillance radar, APY-10, will be put on Boeing's P-81 being built for the Indian Navy. This is the first international contract award for Raytheon's programme, extending the company's considerable presence in the international maritime surveillance market," said Tim Carey, vice president of Raytheon's Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems.

India signed a $ 2.1 billion deal with top aircraft manufacturer Boeing for eight P-81 planes in 2009. The first of the aircraft is scheduled to be delivered to India in 2012.

"Our APY-10 radar will provide the Indian Navy with proven, low-risk technology built on generations of successful Raytheon radar systems," Carey, who is here to attend Farnborough International Air Show, one of the largest in the world, told PTI.

"We are committed to providing reliable systems that keep our customer safe and help them achieve mission success," he said.

The APY-10 radar delivers accurate and actionable information in all weather, day and night, for anti-submarine and anti-surface warship operations and for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission support, said Neil K Peterson, Raytheon's director of strategy and business development.

A member of the industry team that Boeing leads for the US navy's P-8A programme, Raytheon is also under contract with Boeing to provide six APY-10 systems and spares for the P-8A, of which the P-81 is a variant. Four of the six radar systems have been delivered and Raytheon remains on or ahead of the production schedule, said Peterson.

"The radar we will be giving to the Indian Navy's planes will have more features than those with the US Navy," he said.

The radars will be able to work at significantly tactical ranges and also detect small targets.

They will be capable of image targeting at very long ranges and also be able to carry out overall land operations including in the coastal regions.

Asked about the value of the radar deal with Boeing, Peterson said, "We can't disclose this as yet. We are working out all the details."

Good news. However, I am not sure that Indian version would be more capable than US one.

I hope US Does not tell India to sign Dozens of Deals which might allow US Authorities to Check our Planes Every Year in the Name of Safeguarding Technology :undecided:

India as We Know does not want Checkings to be done at our Military bases and we wud not want US to Come on our Military Bases..

P-81 ??? .. Its supposed to be the P-8I..

Did they change the nomenclature from P-8I to 81 or is it once again poor reporting on Defense by an Indian Newspaper..

Procurement Overview
It is the biggest ever defense deal between India and the US, surpassing the 2007 $962 million deal for the supply of six C-130J 'Super Hercules' aircraft for Indian special forces.

The commercial deal between India and Boeing does not include armaments which will be supplied through the foreign military sales system.

Under the contract India has an option to order four to eight more such planes.

The deal was inked on January 1, by defense ministry's joint secretary and acquisitions manager (maritime systems) Preeti Sudan and Boeing integrated defense systems vice-president and country head Vivek Lall, reports the TOI.

India, along with Australia, is amongst the first foreign buyers of the Poseidon system, which is yet to be inducted into the US Navy.

The U.S. Navy plans to purchase 108 P8As to replace its fleet of P3C aircraft. The first aircraft will be delivered for flight test in 2009 and initial operational capability is slated for 2013.
Delivery Schedule

India will get its first P-8I in 2011-2012, with delivery of the remaining seven aircraft expected to be completed by 2015-16.

The P-8A Poseidon, a derivative of the 737-800, is a long range antisubmarine warfare, anti surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft capable of broad area, maritime and littoral operations. It is being built by a Boeing-led industry team that includes CFM International, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Spirit AeroSystems and GE Aviation. The team currently is assembling and testing the first five P-8As.

The P-8Is will replace Indian Navy's antiquated fleet of eight Russian Tu-142M maritime reconnaissance aircraft.
Basing

Based at Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu, the aircraft will help the Indian Navy keep a tab on Chinese nuclear submarines lurking around India.
Performance

The Poseidon has a 1,200+ nautical miles range, with 4 hours on station. Its range / time on station can be considerably enhanced with in-flight refueling.

It is designed to fly low and slow through the weather, unlike the 737-800; the 737 upswept winglets have been replaced with raked-back wingtips, better suited for icy conditions.

The aircraft will be armed with sonobuoys, torpedos and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. So far India has not conveyed to Boeing any interest in arming the aircraft with the Brahmos missiles.
Sensor Suite

For spotting and tracking threats it is equipped with

* An upgraded Raytheon APS137 Maritime Surveillance Radar designated AN/APY-10
* Electro-optical / infrared sensors from Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems
* A rotary internal re loadable pneumatically controlled sonobuoy launcher.
* SIGINT equipment

Its self protection suite includes

* Towed Decoy Self Protection
* Infrared countermeasures
Indian Electronics
The aircraft will feature some electronic equipment built by the Electronics Corporation of India Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited.

Crew
The aircraft has five identical mission operator consoles, with each having the ability to select which sensor they want to study with two observer stations. The aircraft is designed for user to expand and configure 21 crew seats.

AN/APY-10

Raytheon will supply an international version of the AN/APY-10 radar for use on the P-8I. The radar is capable of long-range surface search and target tracking, periscope detection in high sea states, ship imaging and classification using Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR), and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for overland surveillance, ground mapping, and targeting.

High-resolution ISAR can be used to image and classify small, fast-moving vessels that operate close to the shore. SAR facilitates imaging stationary ships and boats as well as coastal and overland surveillance.

The new SAR mode in the AN/APY-10 provides multiple resolution strip map and spot SAR operation, and has high-resolution capability for target ID, battle damage assessment (BDA), and targeting.
Upgraded Sensor Suite
At the Singapore air show in February 2010, Boeing revealed that the Indian Navy had sought an air-to-air mode for the Raytheon-built AN/APY-10, the primary sensor of the aircraft.

The Navy has also asked for an aft radar because the APY-10 provides only 240&#176; forward coverage.

The company also revealed that the US will provide India the new Raytheon Fish Hawk GPS-guidance wing kit along with MK-54 anti-submarine torpedoes as part of the weapons package.

Production and Delivery
Fabrication of the first aircraft will begin during the last quarter of 2010.

yeah, the P-8I is a modified version of the P-8A to meet IN's requirements. More capable or less capable is not the question but IN did requested some special modifications like air search option for the radar. Indian C-130J also has many extra systems onboard.
