Indian Navy tortured us, say fishermen

Express News Service , The New Indian Express

RAMANATHAPURAM: In the midst of growing concern over attacks against Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy, the fishermen from Pamban now claim that they are falling prey to harsh treatment by the Indian navy.

According to Xavier of Pamban, Indian navy personnel intercepted his country boat while they were fishing near Katchativu. They then thrust salt into his mouth and damaged their catch, he claimed.

Annai Indira Gandhi Country Boat Fishermen Association president confirmed Xavier’s claims. He told Express that the Indian navy chased the fishermen from the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), thrust salt into their mouths and abused them. Another fisherman, Keviston said their community was falling prey to attacks by Lankans as well as the Indian navy.

Owing to such incidents, fishermen from the area dread to venture into sea, thus affecting their only source of income. The fact that most of them are unaware of the territorial boundaries at sea, adds to their woes.

Despite repeated attempts, Indian navy was not available for comment.

Attacks on Indian fishermen at the Palk Bay can be traced back to 1982, when the ethnic conflict broke out in Sri Lanka. Indian fishermen have ever since been falling prey to attacks by the Lankan navy, who feared that the fishermen could be supporters of the LTTE.

Even after the ethnic conflict in the island nation ended, it proved no respite for the fishermen, who continued to be targeted by the Lankan navy.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa recently took up their cause and urged the Centre to treat the issue as a national matter and not as Tamil Nadu’s problem alone.

It was in the light of these developments that the Indian navy and the Coast Guard were asked to intensify patrolling to protect the fishermen.

they think they are the british east india company again. expect more of this type of behavior from india now that they serve the anglo's again. then again, they were never actually freed by the anglo's in the 1st place.

Atleast they are alive. If sri lankan navy were there in the place of indian navy than we would reading about one more victim of sri lankan navy

Why is the Indian navy persecuting its own fishermen? Or is there more to the story?

That you registered to post in this thread of all threads is quite interesting. Are you from Chennai or Tamil Nadu by any chance?

culprits should be punished so that there won't be any single abuser among our protectors.

The Tamil Nadu fishermen know exactly what they are doing - poaching.

If they are poaching than catch them and send tham to jail, why are you killing them? Is sri lanka navy thinks that human life cheaper than those fishes( please don't treat them like you are treating indian immigrants) ?

Indian Navy & Sri Lankan Navy joinly patrolling the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL)…….

It appears that for the Tamil Nadu fishermen everybody else is at fault but not themselves.

Tamilnadu fishermen think Indian navy should allow them to enter Sri Lankan waters and do their fishing. This is funny, just like gang of thieves asking help from the Police to rob a house

YOu guys don't understand why there is a problem with center and TN,
1) the present TN government is not UPA ally
2) The growing concern of TN people for kudam kulam atomic power station and its safty in idiyakarai village concerns the center more
2) The Congress have never been a good party when it comes to the issues of TN. They think that they can do what ever they want in issues of TN and escape with it. One day other the other the congress a$$ holes are going to get kicked in TN for not treating us with parity.
