The Indian Navy will receive six MiG-29K/KUB aircraft in 2014 bringing to 21 the total number of aircraft delivered against a $1.5-billion contract for the supply of additional 29 MiG-29Ks singed on March 12, 2010.

Director General of RAC "MiG" Sergei Korotkov, told the press in April 2014 that the company had delivered 4 MiG-29K aircraft and 7 MiG-29KUB to the Indian Navy in 2013 and would deliver 6 more aircraft in 2014.

On December 29, 2012, RIA Novosti reported that MiG had delivered in December a batch of four MiG-29K/KUB shipborne fighters against the second order for 29 aircraft, fulfilling its contractual obligation for the year 2012.

RAC MiG completed delivery of 16 aircraft against the initial order for 12 MiG-29Ks and 4 MiG-29KUBs in September 2011.

MiG is currently producing 16 aircraft per year. The remaining 10 aircraft to be produced in 2014 are earmarked for the Russian Navy, which placed an order for 20 aircraft (16 MiG-29Ks and 4 MiG29KUBs) in February 2012.

MiG plans to nearly double production rate to 30 aircraft per year by 2017. In the past, the company has said it expects the Indian Navy to sign a third contract for 24 MiG-29K/MiG-29KUB aircraft.

The Russian Navy will base its MiG-29 aircraft on its lone aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetzov. The heavy Su-33 aircraft (a navalized Su-27) currently based on the carrier are expected to complete their residual lives in 2015.

I wonder if the IN has any plans for second IAC designing which will be much bigger than Vikrant-II and Vikramaditya.

Any ideas when is the IN planning to induct the Vikrant-II?

Good to know. So by the end of 2014, Indian navy will have 37 Mig-29K/KUB aircrafts.

Certainly not before 2027.

IAC-2 (larger at around 60,000+ tonnes apparently is just now having its design frozen) induction will be around 2024-5 IMHO.

3rd batch of Mig 29s. By then ZHUK - AE upgrade will mature and because we have set up maintenance units here as per deal, we can upgrade the whole bloody lot!

Any ideas when is the IN planning to induct the Vikrant-II?

Timeline is dependent on a decision about the design. A bigger STOBAR carrier, would basically be a bigger IAC1, while a bigger CATOBAR carrier would include a complete new development phase.

This is one purchase that has been tremendous value for money. I don't see the need for a third batch, the presently ordered 45 are enough to fill two carriers. IAC-2 will have heavier and more sophisticated aircrafts, hopefully 5th gen.

Given that both carriers should have at least 20 fighters + trainers for shore based operations and reserves, the 45 are a basic minimum that we need. Sadly the hope is still on N-LCA to be an addition to the Migs, instead of AMCA, which would be the far better fighter to complement the Mig on techs or capability.

The first two carriers will be filled with Migs as well as NLCAs. That will leave plenty of Migs on the shore. I'm hoping that by the time IAC-2 is ready for service, an AMCA or naval FGFA or F-35 will be available.

Amca is dead,at least till economy stabalizes and yes n-lca is a very stupid option.

I mig-29 k=2n-lca roughly.

Actually, we can expect 15 x Migs + ... x N-LCAs on each carriers, which leaves just 15 x Migs for training AND reserves. Not that much and I would definitely prefer 15 additional capabale Migs, over a high number of not capable N-LCAs.

Stop putting blatant lies out there. Where are you getting this from?

Short term the economy isn't great but India's longer term economic growth looks strong, the fundamentals haven't changed.

A naive question - Does it make sense to have 2 types of fighter aircraft on such small carriers? as we need maintenance facility weapons, spares, separate technicians etc etc on these carriers, Not sure whats the logic. in fact NLCA doesn't make sense on these when 29K is deployed. Any expert thoughts?

No it doesnot make sense
However what we could see is one carrier using the Mig 29K/Kubs, while the other using NLCA
but it depends on the performance of NLCA
Indian Navy has only placed an order for 6 NLCA for Rs 900 crores, if they are satisfied, then they will order another 40, which will bring total NLCA to 46, a figure which is similar to the Mig29

God forbid if they dont like the NLCA, THEN, the only other options will be ordering another 24 Mig29K/Kubs or go in for the much more expensive F35B
coz frankly we need more than 80 aircrafts, if we want to ensure that both carriers have adequate air groups for the next 30-40 yrs, taking into account the attritions as well as possible conflicts,
otherwise we will find ourself in a situation similar to Viraat, which is only left with 10-12 Harriers , out of the 30 which were inducted in 1983-85
