Indian Navy special forces to get 177 sniper rifles

India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has concluded negotiations with Italian arms manufacturer Beretta for the import of 177 sniper rifles for its Marine Commandos (MARCOS), the special forces unit of the Indian Navy (IN), for an estimated INR200 million (USD2.98 million).

Official sources said the contract for 177 Sako Tikka T3 TAC 7.62x51 mm bolt-action sniper rifles, which were selected over the British Steel Core Designs SC-76 Thunderbolt model, is likely to be signed in August.

The tender includes 100,000 rounds of 7.62x51 mm match-grade ammunition. Industry sources said rifle and ammunition deliveries would be completed within 6-8 months of the contract being signed.

I know you are trolling but I'll nip this in the bud from the outset.

No manufactuerer is going to make in India for such a miniscule order (177 units) and the market for high-end sniper rifles in India is absolutely tiny (as there is no way civlians can purchase them) so it doesn't make much sense to set up production units for such small arms in India independantly.

What's really absurd is the price, it's around 16.5K USD for the Rifle + Scope + Suppressor (Probably) + Roughly 500 .308 rounds each. AFAIK Tikka T3s are a cheaper offering as compared to the Sako TRG series. Also the Variant offered by Tikka is the T3x TAC A1.

The T3x line starts from aroung 600-700USD. I don't see this rifle hitting more than 2000USD per piece.

This is the usual miscalculation that many employ in military contracts; total procurment cost/number of units= unit cost.

Clearly this is nonsense. The total procurement cost will include training, spares, through life support, ammunition, accesories etc etc

The rifle itself isn't going to be over 3000USD add another 3000USD for the telescopic sight. 2000USD for 500 rounds, the spares, support and training surely isn't going to be around 8500USD per rifle or 1.5 Million USD ie half the contract price. Really wish the price breakup was given in detail.

Through life support and spares would be priced into the deal (as is the case in almost every single defence deal these days) so there would be extensive spares, warrenties, support packages etc. It would all add up. Generally the life cycle cost model assumes 3-4 times the unit price over its life span.

Probably longer, the warrenty itself would easily be for 4 years.

I 'noted' it's for the MARCOS. These aren't classified details, acquisition of a weapon system under a tender isn't a classified detail.

I've never seen a OSV-96 used by the Navy. Heard about the deal but it probably never occurred anyway.
