Indian Navy Ship sunk by Pak submarine, first time after world war in war history

. . . . .
When the INS Khukri was torpedoed, the captain of an accompanying ship, INS Kirpan, showing cowrdice fled the scene.

Charges of cowardice against a naval officer decorated in the 1971 war during an engagement with a Pakistani submarine in the Arabian Sea raise prickly questions.

A survivor of an Indian frigate sunk by a Pakistani submarine during the 1971 war alleges that the captain of an accompanying Indian frigate fled from battle and was decorated with a gallantry award for it. A petition filed by Chanchal Singh Gill, a sailor on board the INS Khukri that was torpedoed off the coast of Gujarat on the night of December 9, 1971, killing 194 crewmen, has demanded a fresh enquiry into the incident.

Chanchal Singh Gill (L) and Rear Admiral Rishi Raj Sood
In his petition filed before the Chandigarh bench of the Armed Forces Tribunal, Gill charges Commander (later Rear Admiral) Rishi Raj Sood of the INS Kirpan, sailing with the Khukri, of cowardice and dereliction of duty and has asked for his gallantry award to be withdrawn. He says a massive cover-up by the authorities led to Sood being decorated with a Vir Chakra for "bravery on the battlefield" instead of being court-martialed. The former sailor has asked for an interim order for the immediate recall of all evidence held by naval headquarters into the sinking of the warship. The loss of the Khukri resulted in India's single largest wartime loss of men. No formal board of inquiry, however, was conducted into the sinking.

Just to correct you about your second part, the pakistani submarine was PNS Ghazi which came to Visakhapatnam Port to attack and sink INS Vikrant. IN shifted the Vikrant elsewhere (near the Andaman & Nicobar Islands). Eventually Ghazi was sunk by hitting a few depth charges which have been planted by a Rajput Class Destroyer near Visakhapatnam's harbour.
Now let me correct your second part.
PNS Ghazi was not hit by INS Destroyer mines, it was hit by its own charges which it deployed near the harbour ......
IN high command also do agree on that they were not aware of PNS Ghazi presence untill it was destroyed .......
How Ghazi was hit by its own mine is also not known. Since its wreck still rest in sea bed, though a few parts were recovered by IN as war trophy.......

Well there are quite a few theories about the fate of Ghazi but not really sure which one to believe. As a matter of fact, my version is the same as what is stated in wikipedia.
Now please don't tell me that wikipedia isn't a reliable source and can be edited by anyone. Yeah, I am aware of that but that is still a reliable source and I also do agree that there are many theories regarding the same.

Its not possible, One has to face the consequences for nuking.
Again, Sir to nuke enemy is not possible in any circumstances. Foget nukes that r for show//display or use it for energy.
Conventional?hybrid/proxy warfare the only options world left with. No to Nukes!

Nuking that ship could well be an end to a possible future conflict, like World war 2 H/N how Japan had to you know give up.
It is very possible too given that we have the capability.
Without nukes, there are I'm sure a lot other ways
In October 2009, a Chinese Song-class (Type 039) diesel-electric attack submarine unexpectedly surfaced within torpedo range of the American aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk.
The abilities of how well Indians could manage their aircraft carrier defenses is still unknown in wartime.
Pakistan should procure one of these diesel electric subs to maintain a regional balance.
There should be a thread on this :P

the indian navy wiped the floor with the pak navy in 1971 this is coming from some one who is absolutely neutral. Karachi was blockaded and many ships were sunk and crippled, the pak navy had no answer to the fast missle attack boats the Indian navy were using, the sinking of the above frigate of the indian navy wasn't the intended target what happened was that pak navy was trying to target a different ship, the torpedo failed to explode on the intended target and this frigate was alerted and tried to intercept the sub but got blown to hell, in short it was a bit of a mericle kill. It saddens me people talk about this as some sort of victory, there was a pak sub that managed to reach mumbai i think and they planned on sinking the indian aircraft carrier, they laid mines under water but ended up hitting there own mine and got destroyed. had that aircraft carrier been wiped out then we'd have something to brag about.

That was Visakhapatnam on the east coast. Otherwise perfect detailing.
