Well, our sailors could do with a good time, relaxing in the semi-tropical serenity of Bali, bathing in the fresh waters there and having some relaxation time.

They deserve it. :)

Nothing surprising. This has been going on for ages. My father in law who was a naval officer had travelled to many countries back in 1970s,80s as part of the port calls.

Sudarshini tracing the historical route linking India and Bali | The Jakarta Post
The Indian Navy ship, INS Sudarshini, is currently embarking on a five-day goodwill visit to Bali as part of its mission to trace the historical route of Indian sailors of olden days to mark the 20th anniversary of the ASEAN-India dialogue partnership.
~
A Balinese Sekar Jagat dance and okokan bamboo musical instrument performance warmly greeted the ship's commander N. Shyamsunder, who was accompanied by seven officers, 32 sailors and 34 cadets.
Numerous Hindu religious leaders from the World Hindu Summit committee, chief of the naval base in Bali Col. I Wayan Suarjaya, India's Consulate General in Bali Amarjeet Singh Takhi, and other officials also attended the welcoming event on Saturday morning.
~
Before docking at Benoa harbor, Sudarshini sailed from the naval base at Kochi,India, leaving on Sept. 15, and called in to Padang, West Sumatra.
~
During the course ofthe 12,000 mile expedition, Sudarshini is scheduled to visit 13 major ports in nine countries in Southeast Asia, including Padang, Bali, Manado (Indonesia), Port Muara (Brunei Darussalam), Cebu, Manila (the Philippines),Da Nang (Vietnam), Sihanoukville (Cambodia), Bangkok (Thailand), Singapore, Port Klang (Malaysia), Phuket (Thailand),and Sittwe (Myanmar).
~
"This is an old traditional route that was followed by Indian sailors more than 5,000 years ago. We are following the same route, we are trying to complete the traditional road," said Shyamsunder.
~
"Five thousand years ago, Indian sailors explored this ancient sea route to trade and also to spread their culture, ideology, goals, people and even their religion. We are just part of it," he said.
~
Shyamsunder added that two Indonesian Navy officers had been involved in the voyage from Padang to Bali.
"We have had a wonderful time with them," he added.
~
India's consulate general Takhi said that the Sudarshini's visit was a historic moment for Indians and the Balinese community. "It reminds us of the civilization linking India with Southeast Asia, Indonesia in general and Bali in particular. We can see the impact of Indian influence here on Balinese life," Takhi said.
~
"I am very grateful to have the Balinese community, as well members of the World Hindu Summit Committee, gather here to welcome the commander and the ship," Takhi added.
~
The arrival of the ship, Takhisaid, also reminded Balinese people of the Bali Yatra, the glorious maritime tradition of transoceanic voyages traders undertook from India to Southeast Asian countries, including Bali.
~
The term Bali Yatra in itself refers to the "journey to Bali" - the favored destination of traders of yesteryear.
~
Bali, Java, Sumatra and Sri Lanka may be dream destinations for the Orissa people in India today, but the historic Bali Yatra celebrates the journey that rolled on for years, binding both land and cultures in the process.
~
While the ship is in Bali, several events will be held, including the India-ASEAN Business Seminar for Progress and Prosperity on Oct. 29 at Bank Indonesia regional office in Denpasar. "We are trying to deepen the economic and investment relations between Bali and India, because there are so many things where we can work together for progress and the prosperity of our two people," Takhi added.
~
An academic seminar on India and Indonesia will be held on Oct. 30 at Udayana University to share history and culture, and provide opportunities for deepening people-to-people contact. "In the academic seminar at Udayana University, we are going to look at our close historical cultural relations to identify the opportunities in any area in which we can work together in future to deepen the relationship," Takhi added.
~
A performance of Indian classical dances will be staged at the Arma Museum inUbud on Oct. 30. The ship's crew are also scheduled to visit Besakih temple, Kintamani, and other destinations around Bali.
~
"Bali is very close to our hearts, to Indians. In fact, all of Indonesia is very close to our hearts, Bali in particular. And there are so many similarities between India and Bali. We share traditions, we share dances, and many other things," Takhi said.
