  • OTO Melara's 127/64 LW - Vulcano gun system has been chosen to arm 13 Shivalik-class frigates and Delhi-class destroyers
  • OTO Melara was the sole bidder for the requirement after BAE Systems decided not to go for the contest
India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently approved the INR15 billion (USD243.5 million) procurement of 13 127 mm guns for Indian Navy (IN) warships, for which Italy's OTO Melara was the sole bidder.

.
Aren't we manufacturing both 76mm & 127mm naval guns under licence production at BHEL plant in Haridwar ?

.
Very encouraging news, a lot of people had been negative about the P-15A having only a 76mm main gun instead of a 127 mm/130 mm main gun.

I'm sure these are for the 3 P-15B Bengaluru class (not the Delhi class as has mentioned in the article ) and 7 P-17A frigates but I'm not quite sure how the numbers work (7+3=10) considering the article say the order is for 13. Maybe these guns will be fitted onto the P-15A Kolkata class destroyers during their next refit?

“VULCANO” is a family of unguided (BER) and guided (GLR) ammunition for the 76mm, 127mm naval guns and 155mm land artillery systems.

VULCANO 127mm ammunition is conceived to give the 127/54 C and the 127/64 LW OTO Melara Naval Guns the capability to meet any present and future requirement for Precision Naval Fire Supportand Long Range engagement of Surface Targets.

VULCANO 127mm BER maintains the anti-air role as well.
VULCANO 127mm rounds capitalize on new and emerging technology based upon a fin stabilized airframe with canard control for terminal guidance; mechanical interfaces are the same as standard 127mm ammunition.

VULCANO 127mm available rounds are:

  • Ballistic Extended Range (BER) unguided multirole ammunition with multi function programmable fuze;
  • Guided Long Range (GLR)ammunition with IR sensor for anti-ship role;
  • Guided Long Range (GLR)ammunition with IMU+GPS autonomous guidance for precise NFS actions (a Semi Active Laser sensor can be fitted as option).
All the systems needed to operate VULCANO 127mm ammunition are integrated into the 127/64 LW Control Console and no mechanical modification to the 127/64 LW gun is required.
VULCANO 127mm is fully compatible with in-service 127/54 C guns with the addition of a module with the functions of:

  • Programmer for ammunition’s fuze and guidance system;
  • Mission Planner and Executer for Naval Fire Support both in stand-alone mode and in interaction with ship’s Network Centric Systems with the role of choosing firing solutions, selection of ammunition, definition of trajectories and firing sequences, ballistic computations etc.
Firing VULCANO 127mm ammunition does not affect the barrel life.

3 Shivalik + 7 17A + 3 Kolkata .

or 7 17A + 2 Kolkata + 4 P15B

There are 4 P-15Bs on order. Delhi class seems to be a mistake, though, it is a possibility since the IN has wanted to upgrade its naval guns for quite sometime now.

Nice... Finally... Good decision... Parrikar rocks..

Of course, my mistake :D

That makes the numbers even more curious. We can guarantee the under construction P-15Bs (4 units) will get them and the P-17A (7 units) making a total of 11, so that leaves only 2 and there is no class of only 2. I feel like the numbers are wrong, perhaps 13 is simply the initial order. It seems like it would be common sense to fit these onto the P-15As once they undergo their SLEP.

Anyone else notice this? This means deals were a sole bidder exists will now progress as a opposed to the past where they would end up stalled indefinitely, encouraging news!

That's the 76mm bro, the one in question (127/64 LW) is this one:

What a beast!

Finmeccanica?

Indeed, which is again very positive because it means the MoD has abandoned it's nonsensical blacklisting policy and that a countless number of Indian defence deals aren't going to be detrimentally effected by other dramas.

Seems most likely to me.

There is 1 Kolkata out with 76mm, the next 2 may get the 127mm without there being a new class of 2 ships.

But think of the logistics : the Oto 127mm and 76mm, 2 types of Russian 100mm cannon, 2 type of russian 76mm cannon, russian 57mm cannon .....

Good sign indeed..

The blacklisting was tagged as a way for corruption. .reducing the competition so that your favourite supplier wins.

As per IN sources, they want just 2 guns. So the OTO 127 will be the larger. Not sure about the smaller. Hence, the request to make in India, since all the IN ships will eventually be standardised to 2 guns.
