At around Sunday midnight the Indian Navy rushed help to a merchant vessel which started drifting due to some fault. The Navy got a distress call from the vessel Jindal Kamakshi heading to Mundra Port from Cochin . The problem occurred 40 nautical miles north west off Mumbai harbour and 25 nautical miles off Vasai.

The empty cargo vessel, according to the IN official, can sink anytime and the search and rescue (SAR) has already been initiated. There are around 20 persons onboard. “Indian Navy has launched one Sea King helicopter to provide immediate assistance in addition one ship being sailed for rendering assistance,” said the Indian Navy spokesperson.

The official said they received information around midnight that the vessel named Jindal Kamakshi is in distress position. “Distress message indicated that vessel listed heavily and the exact cause is currently not known. 20 persons are currently onboard. Cause of listing not confirmed,” said the official.

The official said the ship has been contacted. “We are keeping a close watch on the situation and keeping close to evacuate the vessel should the situation worsen. So till the vessel is identified and the leak is stopped it may sink without much notice. Keeping a SAR asset close in precaution, and monitoring the situation,” said the official.
