The naval variant ofIndia's indegenous light combat aircraft (LCA) is due to soon begin ramp trials.

Avinash Chander, scientific adviser to the defence minister and director general Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), told India Strategic magazine (..:: India Strategic ::.. Home Page: The authoritative monthly on Defence and Strategic Affairs. that the LCA-Navy had already done more than 25 test flights from a runway. As these were successful and met the designated parameters, the aircraft will now be deployed at a naval base in Goa to commence ramp flights, probably after the monsoon.

Goa, on the Arabian seafront, has a major naval air station, INS Hansa, where the MiG- 29Ks for Indian aircraft carriers are also located.

The station has a 14-degree ramp along with necessary testing sensors and paraphernalia to monitor the flights and was specifically built as part of the indigenous LCA-Navy development programme. But as it is a national naval asset, it is shared by the MiG-29Ks for training pilots and flight tests. Both the aircraft need the same degree in the ramp, matching the one on INS Vikramaditya, acquired from Russia, and INS Vikrant, now being built at the Kochi shipyard.

Chander said that the flight tests are being conducted with LCA Mark-I to prove certain technologies and to familiarise the naval pilots with them. One aircraft is operational, another is on the anvil and a third will son be available to complete the trials. After that, for full weaponised operations aboard carriers, will come the LCA Mark-II powered by GE 414 engines, according to India Strategic.

The naval variant, being tested from the HAL airport in Bangalore, has a bigger undercarriage that Hindustan Aeronautics has built to facilitate deck landings. The development programme is coordinated by a one-star naval pilot.

Stupid people want to ruin IN Navy air wing with tejas. Tejas is no match for mig29k yet Navy want to deploy tejas on ACC.
Indian Navy is excited about N LCA. They are putting money in program. What an irony, an outsider has more knowledge

It's got nothing to do with ruining the IN's air wing nothing of the sort, what nonsense. The IN is well aware of the N-LCA's failings have no doubt, simply they desire a domestic fighter jet flying off their flat tops in the future. And they are not stupid they know this isn't going to happen overnight, the N-LCA is the start of a long journey but you need to crawl before you are running marathons.

This was a needless rant on your part sir.

U must be an insider then. Yeah right!

N-LCA is forced on Navy. Why would IN Navy want a fail plane on its ACC when it has mig29k ?

Livefist: F-35? We Want The LCA Navy: Indian Navy Chief
F-35? We Want The LCA Navy: Indian Navy Chief | Indian Defence Forum
Broadsword: Navy, eager for Tejas, placing orders for 8 naval fighters

How did you form this opinion, that it is forced on the navy? Did you make that up simply because the NLCA is less capable than the mig-29K? By that rhetoric, why would the air force want the LCA when they have MKIs and mig-29s and soon Rafales?

The navy has been supporting the LCA project even more enthusiastically than the IAF.

Why exactly is it taking so long for for Indian LCA ( Tejas) to be become OPERATIONAL.

LCA -> Interceptor / Point Defence / Harrier type replacement

MiG 29K -> Air Superiority / Strike Role
Nope, the MiG-29K is a multi-role aircraft and so is the operational NLCA (with the GE F414).
IN Carriers cannot operate different kinds of aircraft for different roles...

What exactly is taking so long for for Indian LCA ( Tejas) to be become OPERATIONAL.
Testing.

well a few things

1. it was not good for "kick backs hungry" UPA govt , MOD baboons & top IAF brass (which kept changing the goal posts)
2. it was underpowered and slightlli over wieght & had some issues with some avionikcs
3.it was owr first serous effort to have a world class fighter so we needed to be "doublli sure of its strenths & weeknesses" and unlike china or pakistan owr air force never takes a plane that has not cleared its FOC

The MoD was firmly behind ADA from the days of Shri.George Fernandes and has always maintained that self reliance is the ultimate goal.

It is not under powered!
The IAF did not even think about a more powerful variant till the Navy backed the NLCA(More powerful engines were a requirement for carrier operations).BTW,the variant of the GE engine on the Tejas is the one that produces highest thrust!
Overweight, yes but that is not an issue as far as I know.
The avionics have no issues,I don't know where you got that from!

Why the f*** did you bring in China/Pak?!
