Indian Navy eyes expansion with three more Russian-made Krivak IV frigates

Because they are more costly, especially produced in Europe, will add another type which is not needed and can't be customised like the Russian vessels.

Have you read about Type 26 FFG project ? It is a custom built FFG. You can put whatever you want in your FFG. Also the design especially to reduce cost. The cost of per warship is close to 450 million $. Even Krivak III cost close to 530 million$ and that too is 2006 cost. Imagine what will be the cost of Krivak IV in 2012.

Have you read about the type 26?? The first one is supposed to enter service in 2021. Imagine when India will get it's first deliveries - 2026-2030 at least. The Yantar shipyard has already made 4 Talwar class, have the experience and are delivering with increased speed - another order and we'll have all nine Talwars in service by 2020.
Plus you are seriously underestimating the Talwar - sure its not next gen but its still extremely potent and better than any frigate our western neighbour is like to get in the near future.

Type 26 has no utility for IN IMHO, it is a ship designed purely to cut costs and to justify cutting defence budget of UK.The Type 26 has already been heavily criticsed for its design and lack of firepower- the P-17/A will have much bigger "punch" than the 26 which is the true embodiment of the phrase- "jack of all trades, master of none". IMO the only reason the IN is going for this option (maybe) is to have simultaneous production of frigates for IN as it looks to increase in size and capabilities rapidly. The Krivak's might not be as powerful and capable as the P-17/17A but they are good ships none the less and good "bang for your buck".

That's not correct, it's a modular design and partners that would want to join the project could have come up with some customisations, but if you read the remakrs when Turkey rejected it, it should be clear that any customisations with Turkish stuff would have made them more costly, especially since they have to fund it. Not to forget that we can't simply add Russian and Israeli weapons or techs on European arms, especially when it's a close NATO country.
Btw, could it be that you mixed British Pounds with US Dollar, because the estimates (because it's under development yet) that I have seen so far were in Pounds => clearly more costly.
And as I said, they don't want to add a new type of vessel which requires more training, new logistics and stuff, but simply to increase the number of Frigats that can be inducted at the same time, because Indian docks are busy with indigenous Frigats which are pretty good as well.
So joining the Brits at this new development, when we are happy with the Indian and Russian vessels isn't really a good idea.

^^^i have read somewhere that the estimated cost of Type 26 is around 600 million $....But Royal Navy like its counterpart Indian Navy and US Navy has a history of underestimating the cost....So it won't be a surpise if the cost of Type 26 goes upto 900 million $....

If this deal go through then by 2022 Indian Navy will have around......
3 Brahmaputra Class
3 Shivalik Class
6 Talwar class{Krivak 3}
3 Talwar Class{Krivak 4}
7 Project 17A
-----------
22 frigates..

P-17As are still part of the Shivlaik class so no need for the distinction. There is also a liklihood that the follow-on frigates to the Shvlaik class will have been commisioned and will be at early stages of construction by 2022.

indian navy should definetly go for it.
talwar class has done pretty well for what they are designed for.
we should increase our frigates no rapidly to accomodate CBG which will have atleast 2frigates in a CBG.
SO go on

Why every time order for 3 ( 3 shivaliks, 3 talwars each time, 3 P-15A etc.) :hitwall: Is 3 favorite no. of IN????

I too wonder that many times. May be "east+west+backup" is the logic :D god knows

really loved it.............

Than when will IN think of east+west+south+ Mediterranean +SCS+Pacific+Atlantic+Arctic+Antarctic+3 backup :devil::devil:

Not only that.....
We have 3 P15 Delhi class destroyers
3 P16A brahmaputra class frigate
3 P 16 Godavari Class frigate.
It looks like Indian Navy is in love with 3 Number.....Thank god they are going to order 4 P15B Destroyer and 7 P17A Frigate....

By the time Batch strength of 3 are comminsioned Technology takes a leap ahead. S frigates officially take 6 years -2 year unofficial.

Do your math now.

Well , actually the real reason why we order in batches of 3 is coz

1:In case of frigates the reason was delay, Indian Shipyards take 10-12 yrs to deliver 3 frigates compared to 6 yrs taken by Russia and China
Let me give you the an example , Godavari class were sanctioned in 1971 , Construction began in 1973 and last frigate were delivered in 1988 , 17 yrs after the placing of order
Same was the case with Brahmaputra class where order were placed in 1988 , and last ship was inducted in 2004 , 16 yrs after placement of order, Infact by the time Brahmaputra class was inducted , the world had moved on to stealth frigates .
Foreseeing the change in technology , India ordered the Talwar class in 1996 , Which were inducted in 2002-04 , A record of within 8 yrs of placing the order

Things have improved in Indian Shipyards , by the time shivalik class was ordered in 2001
This class has completed induction in 11 yrs with induction of INS Sahyadri on 21 July 2012 , now compared to 16-17 yrs it took previously , so its a big improvement
But Indian Navy was again fearing a delay and uncertainty related to capability of Shivalik class , so they ordered another batch of Talwar class in 2006.

But with Shivalik having more than impressed the Indian Navy , and proving to be far more capable than envisioned , so they have placed an order for 7 P-17A frigates
But because of their fear of Delays by Indian Shipyards , they are again looking to hedge their bets by Placing the order for Kirvak IV Frigates which are an improvement over the TALWAR CLASS , This is also the reason why P-17A was trimmed from 9 to 7 , coz Navy feels that it can get 3 Kirvak IV Frigates out of the savings made by not ordering 2 more P-17A Frigates

Also going by the price of P-17A , it seems that the 2.6 Billion USD , IN will save by scraping 2 P-17A , can easily pay for the 3 , 4500 Ton Kirvak IV Frigates
