Indian Navy ditches MV Suez, Pakistan comes to rescue

Cargo ship MV Suez, which was recently released by pirates, was attacked again this morning, and when it contacted the Indian Navy for help, their request was turned down, the ship’s captain told dnaindia.com.

“Four Somali pirates got on to the ship early morning and started firing at us," said Ravinder Singh, the cargo ship’s captain. “We fired parachute rockets at them and threw containers in an attempt to fend ourselves. One of them was injured in the process, which scared them off and they fled.”

When the ship contacted the Indian Navy, they were promised help in the form of patrolling.

“But they never sent any helicopters to look over us in spite of promising to come around for vigilance,” Singh said. “And now they have stopped taking our calls. We are disappointed with the navy. The Pakistani government was faster in responding to our plea.”

The Pakistani Navy has dispatched its warship PNS Babur to escort MV Suez safely Salalah in Oman. Food supplies, medicines and water are among the things that the warship is carrying for the exhausted crew members, some of who are ill too.

The captian also confirmed that Pakistani helicopters are now patrolling the area around the ship. "The choppers will stick around for protection till the warship arrives here," Captain Singh said.

Thread title is a bit stupid since it is the duty of international task force ships to come to rescue of distressed ships

PN was nearby so they came to its rescue ,Even NATO would have come to there if there ships were their

Gulf of aden is huge ,Indian navy only has 2 Destroyers stationed there , it can take several hrs to even days for IN ships to reach them

Nearest IN warship INS Mysore was atleast 30hrs away from place of attack
While INS Tabar was escorting 2 Indian merchant vessel

as far as i remember PNS Babur made a port call to jeddah last week or so for some exercise...
i think PNS Babur was in the area thats why it responded pretty quickly..

Indian Navy warship to escort MV Suez to Oman port

An Indian Navy warship will escort the Egyptian merchant vessel MV Suez to Salalah port in Oman with 22 crew members including six Indians, two days after it was released by Somali pirates.

MV Suez was released by pirates on June 13 and is now "safely proceeding" towards Salalah with 22 crew members, including six Indians, and will be escorted by an Indian Navy Godavari-class frigate to Salalah, government sources said here.

The ship at the moment is being escorted by warships of European Navies present in the region and will be under the escort of the Indian Navy tomorrow morning and will reach Salalah on June 17 ship, they said.

On the possibility of the ship being attacked again by other pirate groups, the sources said the Indian Navy had recommended that the owners of the ship provide a tug for technical support and a 'Vessel Protection Detachment' to be deployed on the MV Suez for protecting it from pirates but they have not adhered to it.

Sources said the navy is coordinating with other navies in the region and closely monitoring the situation during its passage to Salalah.

Somali pirates had released the crew members after ransom was paid to them. The pirates had taken the crew members, including Pakistanis, Egyptians and a Sri Lankan, hostage after capturing the vessel MV Suez last year.

Good job PN and good job by the Indian media for giving PN their due credit unlike the Chinese media convientaly omitted IN name after we played a major part in rescuing a Chinese vessel from pirates.
