Sorry I meant design and build it yourself.

Why not build yourself?
As far as I understand, the ships will be build in India by an Indian shipyard with foreign assistance with its proven ship design.
All the 4 will be made in India but with collaboration with someone. At-least its better than buying Soviet era design half built projects and purchasing designs from those countries calling it indigenous. Why not build yourself?
I don't think you have idea about how this works. The ship will be at first designed on paper as per our requirement along with Director General Naval Design, we won't be buying a ready-made ship.ToT can only get you so far. A LHD does not have complex steam catapults or nuclear reactors like an actual Aircraft Carrier. It also doesn't need huge amounts of weapons integration and sensors like in Destroyers. How is this monumentally hard for India to design and build for herself?

Sorry i got carried away...actually i would like our government to follow the same steps...
I asking myself the same question. It may be because they want them faster and custom made according to Indian specifications, other than that I don't find any other reason! When we are building carriers, nuclear submarines, destroyers, frigates etc why can't we design and build our own LPD.
Sorry I meant design and build it yourself.
Looks like the Navy is like the air force, and Army. Always changing requirements. No wonder nothing gets done on time.
Eventually gets done I suppose.
This is one of the main reason for delays, constant change in requirements. For every project.
I said sorry earlier also and again.Don't be an ***
Yeah, we know, you know and the rest of the world knows it too. We are fooling ourselves by bringing an half built AC and calling it ours. Although I should admit, we should do this. We are developing 2 of our own.You purchase entire soviet Aircraft carriers.
China has a very big naval shipyards and industries supporting it. Our shipyard don't have the facility for modular designing yet, just see the level. We cannot compare our Shipyards to yours (Although development is going on and after 2011, India will also be able to build modular design based ships.)And China can design and build LPDs by itself which is more than you can you say for India.
Yeah, actually according to the tender, these ships will only be an idea, many changes will have to be made inorder to meet the demands set by IN, just like what happened in Australia's case. Although there are few designs which i think should be selected directly just like Mistral or even Canberaa Class. The entire thread is talking about purchasing ready designed proven ships so I don't know where you got that from
Yeah agreed but Multi purpose Amphibious Ships have many other things which an AC does not have. Also we are just developing, we are new. Our Indigenous aircraft carrier is in shipyard. Once it starts sea trials and go for induction then only our shipyards will get confidence to build such big vessels.A LHD does not have complex steam catapults or nuclear reactors like an actual Aircraft Carrier. I found this out in a forum...The broad specifications
(a) The length of the ship would be approx 200 m. Breadth is to be commensurate with the length and tonnage of the ship.
(b) The draught of the ship is not to exceed 08 m.
(c) The ship is expected to have an endurance of 45 days.
(d) The ship is to have Diesel-Electric propulsion in either of the following configuration:-
(i) Twin shaft configuration, with twin rudders and Fixed Pitch Propellers or,
(ii) Shock graded podded propulsion.
(e) The ship is to have a suitable well deck for amphibious operations. The ship would carry amphibious crafts like LCMs or LCACs and LCVPs on davits and should have capability to launch these crafts when underway.
(f) The ship is expected to have a carriage of combat vehicles on one or more vehicle deck. This area should be adequate to embark Main Battle Tank (MBT), AAVs/BMP Class armoured vehicles and heavy trucks.
(g) The ship would be equipped with a Point Defence Missile System, Close In Weapon System, Anti Torpedo Decoy system, Chaff System and HMGs/ LMGs. In addition, ship would have one E/ F band combined air and surface surveillance radar and one C/D band air surveillance radar. All of these would be buyer nominated equipment.
(h) The ship is expected to carry army troops in addition to ship crew.
(i) The ship should have capability of simultaneous operation by day/ night of Special Operation Helicopters and Large Helicopters (upto 35 tons).
I found this out in a forum...
As Per Specification : Only Two with Length of 199m and Draught under 8ms..
Mistral class amphibious assault ship
Dokdo class amphibious assault ship
My vote is on Mistral but Dokdo class is also good and even cheaper...
