Indian Navy Begins Search For New Large Landing Ships

Cleared to acquire more large amphibious ships, the Indian Navy has invited information from Indian shipbuilders for new landing platform docks (LPDs). The navy has stipulated that it wants ships constructed under the Indian government's "buy and make" procedure, which entails the local license build of proven foreign equipment. The navy currently operates a single LPD, the INS Jalashwa, formerly the USS Trenton (LPD-14), but wants LPDs slightly larger, while keeping capabilities, capacity and kit largely the same.

The broad specifications

(a) The length of the ship would be approx 200 m. Breadth is to be commensurate with the length and tonnage of the ship.

(b) The draught of the ship is not to exceed 08 m.

(c) The ship is expected to have an endurance of 45 days.

(d) The ship is to have Diesel-Electric propulsion in either of the following configuration:-
(i) Twin shaft configuration, with twin rudders and Fixed Pitch Propellers or,
(ii) Shock graded podded propulsion.

(e) The ship is to have a suitable well deck for amphibious operations. The ship would carry amphibious crafts like LCMs or LCACs and LCVPs on davits and should have capability to launch these crafts when underway.

(f) The ship is expected to have a carriage of combat vehicles on one or more vehicle deck. This area should be adequate to embark Main Battle Tank (MBT), AAVs/BMP Class armoured vehicles and heavy trucks.

(g) The ship would be equipped with a Point Defence Missile System, Close In Weapon System, Anti Torpedo Decoy system, Chaff System and HMGs/ LMGs. In addition, ship would have one E/ F band combined air and surface surveillance radar and one C/D band air surveillance radar. All of these would be buyer nominated equipment.

(h) The ship is expected to carry army troops in addition to ship crew.

(i) The ship should have capability of simultaneous operation by day/ night of Special Operation Helicopters and Large Helicopters (upto 35 tons).

At last...Good news. They haven't mentioned the number ??// Earlier reports were for 4 LPDs for IN and 4 billion $ is sanctioned for this. But the bad news was IN was looking for Austin-class amphibious transport dock which were cold war era ships. I never understood why India wanted to spend 1 billion $ for each ship and that too the ships which are about to be decommissioned (inducted in 1960) while Russia is paying only $1.81 billion for 2 Mistral class with an option to purchase 2 more of them.

I don't know what you guys think, but according to me LPD is a waste of money. I think we should go for LHDs. My favorite are:
Mistral Class (I hope we select this)
Juan Carlos
Dokdo class

Any idea what helos would operate off these ships?? IN is already facing a shortage of already old airframes. New Inductions? which ones?? What number??

+good to see the SOF cababilities are being considered from outset shows Indian Armed forces are really maturing their SOFs and showing significant foresight in their futur ops ( including various other inductions-rifles,bpjs,strike veichles,UAVs etc..)

The indian navy is looking to induct both new utility helicopters and ASW helicopters. Neither have been finalised but as far as I know both the RFPs have been issued. This is in addition to the ALH dhruv.

Indian Navy is looking for induction of around 56 Light helicopters and 60 Multi-Role Helicopter. These helos are meant to upgrade the present fleet of naval helicopters. I think we will need something around 30 more helos for the proposed 4 LPDs.

I would rather prefer LHD to LPDs.

The specifications indicates that IN interested in San Antonio class. I think India should design and build one in India rather than thiss 'Buy and Make' procedure.

Where did you get this $ 1 billion figure?

Way too much, an LDP carries only a few helicopters, INS Jalashwa AFAIK carries 4 x Sea Kings only, more useful would be even bigger helicopters like the CH 53, that can carry more cargo and troops at one trip, but then you would also have only half the numbers. For 4 x LDPs that would mean, 16 x medium helicopters like NH 90, AW 101, Sikorsky S60 or S92, otherwhise 8 x Sikorsky CH 53s.
That is also the main difference between an LDP and an LHD, because the earlier aims on landing with amphibious vehicles mainly, the latter with helicopters. IN seems not to see a need for an LHD (what I don't understand) and might use the LPDs together with dedicated aircraft carriers only, that would takeover the helicopter transport part.

Here are some possibiliies:

Dude i think there is a higher chance for San Antonio class LPD to enter service with Indian Navy than the Minstral or Dokdo class LHD

Well He is correct , Indian navy is looking for purchase of 56 Helicopters to replace the ageing Alouette 3 , Chetak/Cheetah Helicopters currently in service ,
India is also looking at purchase of 20 ASW Helicopters with option of as much as 60 of such helicopters , these are meant to replace SeaKing helicopters currently in service

However Naval Helicopter tender will only be issued once Airforce and Army tenders have resulted in contracts

Yeah sorry, i got carried way with LHD which could carry 12-15 choppers.

According to the tender the design will more likely to field more helicopters. But still at max it would 8, not more than that.

However Naval Helicopter tender will only be issued once Airforce and Army tenders have resulted in contracts
Any reason why ?//

I didn't said anything about that, but about the capacity of an LDP to carry helicopters.

No problem, I also would prefer LHDs, for different roles, not only to use them on war, or desaster times. Where did you read that more helicopters could be carried? Such LDPs have usually only a hangar size for 2 large, or 4 medium helicopters. What the RFI said is, that it should be able to carry helicopters with a weight of up to 35t, which is the class of the Sikorsky CH 53 Super Stallion:

One more reason I don't understand that MoD didn't shortlisted it in the IAF heavy lift heclicopter competition over the Chinook, would have given more commonality between IAF and IN and reduced costs.

MoD is imo giving the forces too much space for their procurements, instead of combining them to get more benefits. The 56 x LUH for example, are the same that are in the IAF LUH competiton and now tell me why IN needs a dedicated competition for it? If EC Fennec wins, we could simply increase the number to 250 and get around 60 naval versions in one catch.
