i am sad the pirates escaped. if they could have been killed or captured, that would have been a real strong warning to all pirates.

It will help help Indian Navy to boost their reputation in International waters and also safe guard the national and internation maritime intrest.

I would not be to sure of this incident.

Firstly the photo shows an Allouete hovering over the bulker. The helicopter has crew of two and an Air crew diver and hence at the maximum it would have carried is 2 lightly armed commandos hardly a force capable of repelling pirates. The commandos would have used an MK 42 C if it was a serious boarding party.

Secondly there are no weapons fitted on the Alouettes of the Indian Navy so the helicopter would at the best done observation only.

This incident seems more for public consumption than for any serious incident taking place.

1. Indian Navy today foiled an attempt by heavily-armed pirates to capture two merchant vessels, including an Indian flag carrier, off the notorious Somalia coast.

NOTE THE PIRATES WERE HEAVILY ARMED.

2. In a swift action, warship INS Tabar intervened to thwart two near-simultaneous attacks by pirates on an Indian cargo vessel MV Jag Arnav and a Saudi flag carrier MV NCC Thihama within 25 nautical miles of each other this morning.

THE SHIP NEVER USED ITS MAIN GUN OR EVEN THE LMGS USUALLY FITTED WHEN DOING SUCH CLOSE AREA PATROL.

Marine commandos on board INS Tabar flew out in an armed helicopter and launched an assault on the attackers, who were in five speed boats, forcing them to flee into the Somali waters.

TWO MARINE COMMANDOS AND AN UNARMED HELICOPTER LAUNCHING AN ASSAULT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

Even as this operation was on, the warship received a panic call from MV Jag Arnav, a merchant vessel owned by Mumbai-based Great Eastern Shipping Company, with about 20 crew members on board.

Arnav, a 38,265-tonne bulk carrier, was also ambushed by heavily-armed pirates in speed boats soon after it crossed Suez Canal and was eastward bound, the Indian Navy said here.

Here is excerpt from other news source, It was quick reaction of Indian ship and commandos in helis which undid the hijack, pirates seemed to be taken by surprise hence fled.

The report mentioned that the Indian merchant ship was 60 nautical miles east of Aden when the Somali pirates tried to seize it. The captain of the ship sent alarm signals, which were picked up by another Indian warship INS Tabar patrolling in the vicinity. The ship owned by Great Eastern Shipping Company was cruising toward India from an African port, when the pirates tried to board it and hijack it.

Soon marine commandos on Indian warship INS Gomti flew toward the merchant ship in a helicopter and fired on the Somali pirates, who then fled from the scene. The ship was then escorted to safety by INS Tabar.

I disagree Flintlock( offcourse with Respect). Evan if there were 2 or 3 pirates but if they were pirates they must be armed with bad intentions, and what if that would have captured the ship and asked for ransom or killed any sailor onboard ?

Indian Navy's operation should be seen as a precautionary and moral boosting.

SA naval chief praises Indian Navy's action against pirates

Kochi (PTI): Praising the Indian navy's recent action against Somali pirates, South African Naval Chief Magalefa today said that the entire world should join together to tackle piracy on high seas.

"We should support such an action," Rear Admiral Magalefa said, referring to the Indian navy's action against pirates foiling their attempts to hijack a commercial liner in the Gulf of Aden recently.

Speaking to reporters on board South African warship 'Sas Spioenkop', which arrived here this morning, he said "we cannot as a coastal country be blind and insensitive to the threat of piracy. We are very much concerned with what is happening around the whole of Africa."

"We believe that this problem that is around the whole of Africa and any other such places like the west Africa, it is a problem that the international community must come up and have consensus on how to deal with it," he said, adding "it is not a problem that can be left to one country. It is a problem that the whole world should look at it."

He said, "we do not believe in unilateralism, we believe in multi-lateralism. We should come together as a world and say how do we deal with it."

"... South Africa will not hesitate to get involved ... you can count on us. We will get involved," he said.

Replying to a query, Rear Admiral Megalefa said, "One must applaud India for its intervention a few days ago."

"One of the issues we will be talking about with India is how best to proceed, may be under the India Brazil South Africa Agreement, which is already there. These issues must be addressed because the threat that is out at sea is threatening the very economic well being of India itself and South Africa as well," he said.

INS Tabar sinks pirate ship in Gulf of Aden

An Indian warship from the navy's western naval command was reportedly involved in a crossfire with a pirate vessel in the Gulf of Aden.

INS Tabar fired AK-630 deck guns at the pirates on Tuesday night in an effort to repulse an attack by the pirates.

According to unconfirmed reports, the pirate ship was sunk in the cross fire. The Indian Navy is yet to confirm the reports of pirate ship sinking.
